O.K. talk to me please, the 94 Marlin in
« on: March 18, 2006, 11:07:02 AM »
.44 magnum.
I'll spare you the loooooooooooong story but suffice it to say I find myself knee deep in lever actions.
Well, knee deep to me, that and "N" frame Smiths.
I've run the field of firearms, from AR-15's to Springfield M1A, in rifles, and bottom feeder autos in handguns.
I find that lever actions and revolvers are so red blooded American!
A couple weeks ago I got a lever Winchester 94 Trapper in .357.
Just love the thing but I am particularly fond of Marlins.Well don'cha'know a 94 Marlin came my way last night!
It's very much used, been carried in a pick up truck rack and bears the scars, but the metal is 95% and I can refinish the forend without any trouble. I doubt the thing has been fired much.
It has the original sights, and someone put a Lyman tang sight on it.
I've never had an 1894 Marlin and never a rifle in .44 magnum so I'm looking for all the advice and opinions I can solicit.
The Lyman tang looks like it's only adj. for elevation. That so?
What earthly good is a tang sight that only adj. up and down?
The only ammo I have is Wally white box Winnie 240 jsp for my M-29.
Could you fellers tell me what to expect with open sights?
The Lyman tang has got to go as it interfers with the way I grip the gun.
Could I put a receiver peep on it and which one?
What about a scope on the little carbine????
I'm getting older and a scope helps but would it look right on this neat little gun?
I doubt I'll ever do anything but plink with it as in Ohio you can't use it on deer but I have a woods and it'll make a great walk around gun.
Why wouldn't the 94 make a perfectly suitable home defense gun?
By the way I do reload and have everything to roll my own except ambition.
So the bottom line questions are:
What kind of 100 yard accuracy is the 94 capable of?
Scope or peeps.
How does one adj. the Lyman tang for windage?
If scope which one? I'm sure a 4 X 16 would be way big time out of place. What about a nice small 2.5 up to 4 X???
Never tried cast boolits in a micro groove. Thoughts. :P

I don't own a 44, but a 357. I have no earthly idea why anyone uses a tang site. THEY ARE IN THE WAY.  Receiver sites or scope is a preference/need thing. I have a Williams WGRS on the 94C, a 3x Leupold on a Marlin 30TK and a Williams FP on a Savage 340. My eyes are so so at age 53. I can put 5 in 1.5" with the 94C at 50yds. As far as looks of a scope on a levergun-- I hate big bell scopes and don't own but one variable (on a Contender). My preference is a fixed 4 or less and it must have a 20mm objective, no larger. A 2.5x on the 44 would do you fine. I have yet to set one up as a scout, (question about master eye) but that is an option some really love. See The Bear 78's stainless 45-70 guide gun.

Shoot the Walmart white box stuff, I read good things about it. Reload if you want or not, I do it on the cold, windy days (and night) when shooting is not as much fun. It doesn't save too much $, but I enjoy it and am always looking for accuracy. Some microgrooves will shoot cast well, some won't. I'm not hung up on cast, but they are cheaper. If it's accurate and performs well on game, I could care less if it is cast or jacketed.
Any law that makes self-defense illegal or impractical is an illegitimate law, and should not be obeyed, because such a law ultimately subjects people to the criminal element.

I took the tang site off the rifle.
It is most absolutely a p.i.t.a. and in the way.
A reciever sight will go on the Marlin 1894.
