barnes triple shock bullets copper fouling?
« on: March 30, 2006, 10:34:08 AM »
I noticed they say the "grooves" in the bullet reduce copper fouling.  I've never experienced copper fouling in my 30-06, and I was pushing 150 gr. interlocks at about 2900 fps. I'm wondering if copper solids produce  more copper fouling than a jacketed lead bullet?

I'm really liking these TSB's  They are very accurate and my barrels seem to be alot cleaner.  I'm also not seeing much in the copper fouling dept.

Have you heard of the new maximum range x bullet that barnes is coming out with? polimer tip, boat tail, with the grooves in the side, only this one has a tungston core.  Only problem is they are gonna be  about 1$ per bullet!!!   do ya suppose thease grooves increase barrel life any? They are supposed to give increased velocities.

The reason you may get more fouling from Barnes bullets is the copper is softer than a jacketed bullet.  :D

Redhawk 1 is correct!  Barnes is one of a few manufacturers that do not alloy their copper.  Some barrels don't foul too badly with them, but others do.  I've been shooting them in one of my big bores for about a year now, and yes, they foul like crazy, but shoot well.  I gave up trying to scrub the fouling out with conventional solvents and started using Knock Out foaming bore cleaner.  Works great if you let it sit overnight.  With this stuff on hand, I really don't care about the fouling any longer, as long as they shoot well.

If I look down the bore of my rifle, it looks nice and clean but when I put Barnes bore cleaner on a patch and run it through, it comes out black or purple so I know fowling is there.  Barnes says barrels have to be very clean to get accuracy from their bullets.

I've seen the way Barnes bullets perform on game (excellent), but they haven't been the most accurate bullet in any gun I've tried them in (like 222 Remington, 22-250, 30/06, 375 H&H Mag., 458 Lott, etc.) so, until I find the secret to accurate loads with them, I'm going to use something else.  I've found the accuracy of Nosler, Sierra, Woodleigh and Hornady bullets to be much superior.  Even at times I've shot Barnes bullets with meticulously clean barrels, they haven't printed as well as my other choices and they cost quite a bit more.

Grumulkin, I have found the Barnes X and XTP's to be very accurate in all the guns I shoot them in. My 416 Rigby at 100 yards gives me a 1 inch group. Same with all my other guns that I shoot the Barnes bullets in.

gwindrider1, I never try to get all the copper fouling out, just like you, as long as I get good accuracy, why scrub tell it shines?? :D

Redhawk, do you have a secret for success with Barnes bullets?  With my Encore 22-250 the other day, I got 1/2 inch groups with Sierra 53 grain match bullets and 2 inch groups with Barnes Triple Shocks in the same weight.  I guess 2 iinches at 100 yds. is usable but not what I would expect in such a gun.  In both cases they were seated to be just off the lands.

In my CZ 550 in 458 Lott I get 1 1/2 iinch groups with 350 grain Woodleigh bullets and 2 to 3 inch groups with Barnes Triple shocks in 300 grains.  In each case they were crimped on the cannelure.

Grumulkin, I don't know of any secret, but I do play with seating depth. I also put them very close to the lands. I don't know if it is the powder combination or what. I am using the Barnes bullets in my 300 Win Mag, 338 Win Mag and 416 Rigby and Ruger #1 in 45-70. My 22-250 I use the Nosler ballistic tips and in my 7mm08 I use the Sierra Game King. My 243 I use either Barnes TSX or Hornady bullets.  :D

I'll bet if you use Barnes or Sweets copper remover, you'll get some blue patches out of that '06. All jacketed bullets leave some copper fouling, even on barrels that have been lapped smooth.
