Lead Bullets
« on: April 23, 2006, 04:12:29 PM »
I have a lee bullet mold that my brother gave me he says that it will through 410 grn flat round nose bullets for 45-70.  I have a .458 bullet sizer and luber
I have wheel wts and also pure lead , does anyone have a suggestion on how to mix them togrther to get a good hunting bullet that will expand but still not lead barrel. I plan to load in the midrange of velocity and hope to use lead bullet most of the time. And also what do you guys use for flux.
Thanks for info.

I have been using wheel weights exclusively since 1975 for every thing from 38 special and some 357mag loads to 47-70. I mold a 170gr gas-check for my old winchester 3030, a 158gr swc for my 357mag rifle and a 405gr fn for my 4570. As far as mixing the pure lead with it I personally wouldn't because of sofening the bullet too much. A cast bullet kills differently from a jacketed. It penatrates rather than mushrooming. Keep the load to around 1700fps in a modern 4570 and it will be a winner. Another trick to harden it somewhat like case hardening is drop the bullets out of the mold into a 5 gallon bucket of water with ice in it. My favorite flux is simply a small piece (the size of a dime) of bullet lube and stir the lead. Lighting the smoke with make it burn off cleaner. :)

like was said wws make a fine bullet for most applications only reason to alloy them or harden them is if you plan to push them about about 1500 fps then they could stand to be a little harder. Or if your going to shoot black powder out of it you might want to consider going with 5050 ww/pure.
