Glcoks are okay and fine, but for what you are wanting a hand gun for, I would use a long barreled 22 LR or 22 mag or one chambered in .17 cal.  The 9mm or .40 cal is a bit over kill for squirrels and rabbits.

Just my .02 cents  8)

:cb2: Sorry, can't help you with the 9mm or .40, the only Glock I have right now is a .45. However, my .45 (G21) is one of most accurate handguns I have ever had. Out of the box it has out shot some 1911s that have had all kinds of stuff done to them. I'd just get a good ol' Glock 17, a case of cheap 9mm, and just have some fun. I've got a fine shootin' S&W M10 .38 Special that I use for the same sort of recreational plinking. Sometimes you just want to make a bigger hole than a .22.  :)

The Glock 17 would be hard to beat for a centerfire plinker/pest control toy. I have a lot of fun with mine.
Griz, sounds like you have an exceptional mdl 21. Mine is reasonably accurate, but no prize winner. Our issue 21s were about the same.

I have a 17L longslide with Dawson Precision adjustable sights. Pretty sweet deal.
From a rest mine will shoot 2" at 25 yards, so I'm not sure an aftermarket barrel would help much. I had a KKM barrel in my Glock 20-10mm that was 2" accurate as well.
To get top notch accuracy, I would recomend having Jarvis fit a barrel to your slide.
Barsto is too slow and grumpy.
With all my Glocks that I've owned, replacing the sights has always been the biggest improvement in accuracy. Either Heinie fixed sights, Bo-Mar adjustables or Dawson adjustables have givin me the accuracy I wanted.

I have been to a lot of shooting ranges and matchs.I have never seen a glock that could shoot as accurate as other hand guns.thier accuracy is fine for what the pistol was developed for.but a bulleyes pistol it is not.with that said, either one will suit your needs.with the high caps mags you can walk the rounds in.
my huntin rifle is safe from confiscation only while my battle rifle protects it.

I would get a Glock 22 40 S&W, then get a 357 Sig barrel for it. My Fox Ridge barrel ($99.00) 357 is accurate enuff to pop rabbits at 25 40- yards..........now, if you plan on eating them...... :o

With my Glock 22 I have a Wilson 40 S&W barrel and it put all rounds fired into a 3/4" hole it makes. If you do your part.

I have 4 Glocks and they are with out a doubt the most reliable defense handguns around.  However, I don`t think they fit the bill for shooting rabbits or squirrels and I would not buy one for that purpose.  Look at Rugers Mark III 22 Hunter and put a speed dot on it or low power scope.

:)  Do you absolutely, positively, need an aftermarket barrel?  Otherwise this means you're looking at either a standard Model G-34 or G-35.  Both are excellent long-barreled pistols, respectively in 9mm or 40 S&W.

If you want something slightly smaller that could also serve you as a typical everyday carry pistol, then, you have another choice:  You could buy a standard Model G-17.  Then get an extra, Lone Wolf, +2 inch, extended and ported barrel for use around the farm.

In my opinion, of the two calibers you've mentioned, 9mm FMJ bullets would be best for what you're going to be shooting at - especially if you plan on eating anything you shoot - and you can't get centerfire ammunition any cheaper than 9mm!

I know this is the Glock forum; but, I can't help wondering what you might think of a SIG, 'Mosquito'?  Here's a picture of their 22 caliber target package:
