Shot my .270 yesterday
« on: March 15, 2006, 04:55:20 AM »
Finally took the .270 I got off Stan out to the range yesterday. Only had 5 rounds, but it was such a nice still day I couldn't wait. Stan said he had it sighted in a few inches high at 100 yards so I tried starting at a hundred...big mistake. No hole...then I shot a 1" 3-shot group with it...at 30 yards...BUT..my rest was not very steady and I seemed to be wobbling all over the place. Found out the windage was set perfect, but elevation was real high, so I cranked my elevation way down...moved out to a hundred yards and was still hitting about 7 inches high, so I cranked it down some more. Should really be close when I go out next time. I'd taken the forearm off, and found a kind of flat rubber washer. I replaced it with an O-ring...Might have been the wrong thing to do. I shot Remington core-lock 130 grainers..Going to try Winchester 130's next...with a lot steadier rest. If I can find a combination that will give me at least 2' groups, I'll be satisfied. If I can't, I'm going to try putting one of those bathroom plungers on my barrel (limbsavers). One good thing..no problems with stuck cartridges.

Another factory load to try is the Federal Fusion, it comes in 130gr and 150gr, Sportsmans Warehouse carries them for about $16 a box, IIRC.

Hello A.J.

Congrats on the new (to you) .270.

Maybe this will provide some encouragement.

Last summer I bought a used synthetic Handi in .270.  The only reason I did was because of the price ($135.00).  Being a .30-06 guy my whole life, I had never owned or intended to own a .270.  But what the heck!  It was a Handi in a caliber I did not own and, as stated, the price was right.  I even thought I may sell or trade it someday for something I may want more.

I decided to take it to the range one day just to see what it shot like.  I picked up a box of Win. 130 gr bullets and put a Tasco Golden Antler 3X9X40 on it that I had on a .22.

Turns out it was one of the easiest Handis I've shot to get on zero.  IIRC I only fired 2-3 rounds at 100yds before it was consistantly through the B-eye.  It was very comfortable to shoot and the recoil was noticable lighter than my .280 or .30-06 Handi's.  The bottom line:  It has found a new home.  The Golden Antler still sits on it and with the synthetic's I intend to use it for foul weather deer hunting.

Good Luck and enjoy!

Went to Wally World and picked up some more bullets. They didn't have the Fusion, so I picked up a box of 130 Gr. Winchester Power Points (of course, cause they were cheap). Shot a 2" group at a hundred, and a 4" group when I moved out to 200 yards. While that's as accurate as I need, I've about made up my mind to put one of those Sims Limbsaver Barrel Deresonator's on it. Saw one on a rifle in a hunting show recently. Even though it was a bolt action with a stainless barrel, it didn't look that bad. It wasn't as bulky as I thought it would be, and would probably be even less noticable on my dark barrel.

Powerpoints are all I use in my .270 and 30-06. Never had a deer get away and they are inexpensive. My best hunting buddy uses 130 gr. Remington Core-lokt in his .270 and has been real pleased with them, also. About the same price as PP's at Wal-Mart.

Greenjeans, you might not have noticed in my original post I started with Remington Core-locts. Had several left over from a box I was shooting in my Remington 700 (that I gave to my son). The 700 likes the core-locts, the Handi doesn't seem to.

I missed the fact you started with the Core-lokts. Age is catching up, I guess. The only rifle I have that shoots Core-lokts as good as PP's is a .308 Savage I have. Have fun getting it right regardless of what you use.
