neck turning in factory rifle?
« on: March 31, 2006, 03:01:56 PM »
I discovered a Sinclair neck turning thing down in a box of stuff from a garage sale.  Logically, I can't see where it is worth the time with a factory chamber, but part of me is thinking concentricity is concentricity.

My case prep has been clean/flatten primer pocket, trim, and necksize.  I am going to experiment with deburred and non-deburred flashholes next weekend.  I honestly don't think that I am a good enough shooter/have a good enough rifle to tell the difference.

Hi
Buy it!!! Trim the cases, just lightly, so they are the same neck thickness all the way around. I have never found brass, where the neck was the same thickness all the way around. Just remove from the thick side to the thickness of the thin side. That way the bullet starts out centered on the bore. You can also get a primer pocket uniformer, to square up the bottom of the primer pocket. It all helps!

Here is a way to look at it, unless you are doing some very high volume shooting, then the time it takes to turn the neck is about the same amount of time to keep it trimmed, and you only have to do it once. Are you a good enough shooter to see an improvement? Maybe not yet, but if you practice with high quality goods, you will become better with high quality goods.

I have found a measurable difference in accuracy between cases that are neck turned and cases that are not.  Some folks say it makes no difference because of the slop in a factory chamber but, if nothing else, it uniforms the bullet pull as well as centering the bullet.
How much does it change?  I'll put it this way, if I am shooting a factory match, I will have turned necks; if I am going hunting, I probably won't.

But everyone should turn a neck or two so they can see for themselves.
