Mitch,

One point of advice from a retired Army 1st Sergeant...

Forget the commercials… It is NOT an “Army of One”.

The military is the ultimate TEAM sport.

The Drill Instructors and cadre and yes the Officers, look for the man who helps his fellow trainees.

LISTEN UP MAGGOT!!!, please excuse me, I mean Mitch :-D (I got carried away). At one time you stated you were not so dumb as to go into the Marines. I hope you are smart enough to listen to, and HEAR, GrampaMike. He IS the guy to listen to, he's been there and done that, and he knows from where he speaks, best of luck buddy....<><.... :D

i'm sorry  but i have no real desire to join a branch of the military known as "bullet catchers", just not me.

i do however like the idea of being in a bradley and not catching any bullets and that 25mm chain gun sure makes me sleep better too.

i'm also not one to make a decision lightly i've been talking to recruiters (and people who actually served) for the better part of 2 years, and marine's signing bonuses suc i'll take my 25K

grampa , i hear you loud and clear , i'm not about me in anything i do, your only as stronge as your weakest link. an army of one can be beat with one .$50 bullet

Hey Mitchell, good luck and thanks for serving!

I'll point out I have little standing on this conversation, since I was twixt wars and didn't serve. But I worked with several marines ( and learned there are no ex-marines) and although they are in their 50's and 60's, to man they would report for duty if called.

Huh....I didn't know that I wasn't supposed to be called a bullet sponge cause I'm in the army, and not the marines :? .  Anyhow...that Bradley might not let too many bullets through it, but I bet you have an RPG or two come your way, I'm just fooling with you.  I agree with what grampamike said, as well as andy...that army of one slogan is a bunch of crap, and they will be sure to let you know that as soon as you get there (right after they take away your mouthwash, shaving lotions, etc....just because it has alcohol in it, and they are afraid you'll drink it).  Good luck though, and like I told you before, let me know how things are going, and if you need anything.

Grampmike...what was your mos if you wouldn't mind telling?

Mitch,

I've heard that nickname given to soldiers too, right along with grunt, g.i., etc...  I went to Ft. Sill, OK.  Nice place, prolly alot better if you didn't have to do stuff for the military.

I would be willing to bet most of the members of this forum have served.  So Mitch, you can probably learn anything you want from the brotherhood here.  Even the OLD ones.

There are marines in my office, they are the finest men.

Mitch I knew you was a good young man when I met you at 2005 P-Dog Shoot.  Thank you for serving, so many young men do not.

agreed i have a few friends that joined the marines, they most of the others i've met have been great men. theres bad apples in every bunch. i do think the army has a lot more personal advantages then the marines but thats just me.

army and marines have to pick on each other a little , its a big brother little brother thing, and we all know that my scrawny little self could kick the crap out of any marine

Good luck to ya Mitchel. I'll give you the same peices of advice that I have been giving guys since my second day of basic training.

1. Do what your Drill SGT tells you to do imediatley and with out hesitation
or question.
2. Don't take anything personally.

Basic training is all about learning to be a soldier. Though it is demanding, dangerous, and a great service to your country, being a soldier is a job. I excelled in basic training and throughout my military carrer be cause I approached it that way.Don't take it persoanally when you get yelled at. The guy yelling at you is doing his job and it could easily be you under that Drill SGT hat down the road. Just do your push ups and realize that all the exercise torture/punishment is just making you stronger. Don't break the rules. They're simple and there for a reason. I hated basic when I was there but now remember it fondly. There is something to be said for being told what your going to do and when, where ect...  God bless you and good luck. What MOS are you going into? One more bit of advice. Even if you plan to do 1 tour and get out approach it as a carrer. A lot of guys plan on getting that college money and getting out end up reupping and find themselves behind the curve in carrer development.

Mitchel, a hearty thanks for choosing to serve this great county of ours. In the early 80's I went to basic in Ft. Benning GA. Home of the infantry. I was part of a socalled new idea. A COHART group. Paltoons were formed in basic and they stayed togeather for the next 3 years. We got the team effort down real pat durring basic. Second day there, our platoon leader had a meeting with the squad leaders and we decided that if one of us messed up and was punished, we would all serve his punishment. We help each other every way we could. It made us stronger and faster, ad there wasn't any task we couldn't overcome because of the team work. Each one of us was crosstrained in the others job, so we were all equally qualified. Team work and brother hood was what it was all about. Race, color, religeon, and geographic location all melted away as we became Bravo Co. 1st Platoon 1stITB. And remeber... you have an advantage over most.. you already know how to kill with one shot      Who knows.. ya might even want to consider being a sniper :gun4:       HOOAH!!!

i am highly considering it and i'm going to request it when i get to my unit, i heard that fort benning is doubling its slots for sniper school , so with the way i shoot (said with the most humility possible) getting in shouldn't be that hard but passing a school with a 68%- 75% washout rate wont be easy ,so we’ll see.

cattleskinner, nice squirrel gun but what the barrel life like on one of those??

markus thanks for your advise, and my MOS is 19 Delta (cav. scout), First ones there and last one to leave. HOOAH

Thats where I did my basic and AIT, Fort Benning GA. Yep I was a grunt,  I carried the M-16 then my last two years I carried the M-60.  Pick  some good friends and you will be fine. I hope you get to do sniper school.

Good luck

If you get a chance to do sniper school definitely do it. It's not the shooting that washes a lot of folks out. It's very physically challengingas well. I'm sure a lot has changed since the mid 80's but there is a whole lot more to being an Army sniper than shooting, land navigation, cover and concealment, used construct your own guille suit as as well. Learning the role of observer is equally as important too. I did a M.P. Sniper school at Benning in July 89 that was brutal. Laying on the ground in 99 deg heat with 99% humidity aint no fun.

Hehe.. I can still remeber the cold mornings and the blistering afternoons at FT Benning... and the red clay... I don't think anything is harder to get out of your BDU than that red clay. Ahh.. those were the days.
