Finnish Spitz. ;)

Points the squirrel by barking it. Though this feature is nowadays taken as a annoyance mainly because "squirrel-barks" disturb the hunt of capercaillie and black grouse.. Those birds are the main target when hunting with these dogs.

But it hasn't been always like that. Squirrel fur was centuries ago Finlands first currency and for that reason dogs were bred and trained to hunt mainly squirrels.

I've got a Jack Russell that I originally got for copperheads, and other boogers, but he is a squirrel hunting machine.
Last week I got a dog for inside, but he is a Rat Terrier, and they make good squirrel dogs to. Well see.

The pic is of my Jack named Huff. He has one up a pole in the pic.
You may all go to hell, I will go to Texas. Davy Crockett

A Jack Russel/German Shorthair cross! It is also one heck of a track tracker too and only weighs in at 32 pounds.   ;D

quite a few times we have been squirrel hunting when the acorns are on the ground.
my jack hides behind a tree, waiting for them to come to the ground to feed.
when they get far enough away from a tree.... the race is on !!!!
he runs to the tree and usually catches them in mid-air when the squirrel jumps to the tree.
catches them in the neck and shakes till they break.... then drops them and bounces around them
and nose pushing them. hope'n it will move again !!!!   what a dog... sometimes i don't even take
a gun.... ;D

;) I don't have a squirrel dog, but shot some squirrel over a neighbors dog when I was a kid.. All I remember was it looked like a beagle crossed witha terrier..Since then after I retired, I hunted squirrel with a friend and he had a Mt. Cur. Wonderful dogs...They were silent trailers and only barked when the squirrel was treed... Maybe that is common with all squirrel dogs I do not know. He offered me the pick of a litter...I loved those little dogs, but had 2 goldens at the time and one more dog would have been too much....Been sorry ever since...
