RL22 Too Slow for 8mm. Mauser?
« on: April 20, 2006, 08:20:44 AM »
I was looking to see if there was any possiblility to load my 8mm. Mauser using RL22 behind a 175gr. Sierra Pro Hunter bullet.  I have plenty of this powder left, and I don't use it in my 300 Weatherby anymore (it likes IMR7828).  In the mean time, this powder just sits around.  The gun is a milsurp Yugo M48.  Thanks in advance.

If you just want to shoot then yes it'll work. I use the surplus IMR5010 (the slowest powder period) for various military calibers for lower pressure loadings. with cheap powder and cheap pulldown bullets.

But don't expect any kind of high perfomance from your load.

krochus:

Why do you use the super slow powder? Is it just to keep the pressures low? or is there another reason too? Thanks.

I wouldn't use RL-22 until bullet weight got up to 200 grains or more.

Thanks for the input.  I was hoping I might be able to use RL22 with the 175s just for the sake of using up the powder.  IMR4064 seems to be a good one in the 8mm, as it seems to be in many 30-06 and .308 Win. sized casings.  So I guess RL22 will just have to sit around a little longer.
