4-wheeler - mileage/range?
« on: May 01, 2006, 05:47:12 PM »
Hey guys ,

How far -ballpark- will a midsize 4-wheeler travel on a tank of gas?
While we're at it how far into the wilderness have you been and do you commonly carry extra gas?
Thanks Mike

Almost every wheeler has a different size tank so it is hard to say. Most mid-size ATV's will get 15 to maybe 20 mpg. It is not hard to find trails to hunting camps that are 30 or 40 miles from your truck.
I never travel more than 10 miles from the truck without a few gallons of extra fuel and some motor and gear oil, and an ax and a fold-a-saw and well this could be a long list but you get the idea.

I haven't been far into the wilderness I guess, as where I usually hunt the camp house in only a couple miles max to the hunting area.  I park and walk the rest of the way.  My Rhino has an 8 gallon tank so if we are out joy riding on the county roads, or ranch roads, I jsut check the tank before heading out to make sure I don't leave camp on an empty tank...

The average four wheeler will run about 60-80 miles per tank, some higher, some lower.  A lot of variables to consider.  As they say in ads, YOUR MILEAGE MAY VARY.

I have tested my mileage with a GPS several times. If I am on dirt roads that allow comfortable driving no extra weight on board I get as much as 60 MPG no hot rodding. I have had heavy loads with two adult riders, full sized deer, and lots of gear on a Honda recon 2x4. These trips for deer hunting is nothing but rock crawling up hill very slow speed gaining 1500 feet elevation. The mileage is under 10 mpg in this application.
I never carry gas in the areas I hunt. I used to but never needed it so I quit taking it. If I go to a new area where I think i might be driving say 30 miles one way I will take a gallon with me. it depends on how the ATV is driven, and how much weight is on it, for my ATV.

I read back quite a ways in the threads and found one ,a few guys did a longrange trip in nevada.

I'm moving to colorado in a year and plan on doing so way in yonder camping/hunting.So the 60-80 miles per tank average should do fine.

Idaho Ron 10 miles per gallon is alot in rough terrain if you think about it . Mike
