value of rolling block
« on: April 02, 2006, 08:34:53 PM »
Hate to ask question concerning value of a rifle but after lengthy research on internet, am turning to ya'll for input.  Found a late 1800s rolling block rifle.  Dealer said it was Husqvarna made and said it was 8X58Danish.  Dealer has a table full of very old Swedish shotguns to sell and a rolling block that had been recently imported.  Web research revealed existence of 8X58Krag or AKA 8X58R(immed) cartridge from 1880s or earlier.  Dealer's rolling block seems to be a sporterized military rifle based on web pic I found of military rifle.  Military stock shortened and I'm not sure if original barrel.  Stock had same brass arsenal disk, I've seen on 96 Swedish mausers.  Disk told me barrel a 1, new if I remember swedish code system correctly.  The bore was in extremely good condition.  All remaining wood, beautiful.  Metal finish good for something that old.  No sign of pitting and etc on exterior metal.  Front sling holder silver soldered to barrel and front sight did not seem military, but rear sight did.  Don't think barrel had been shortened.  There you know what I know.  Any idea on its value.  May be able to get it for $380.

Just found web pic and info:  M67/89 Swedish Army Remington Rolling block probably sporterized by Husqvarna for civilian use, early 1900s, and rebarreled to 8X58Krag.[/url]

I can't tell you the Roller's exact value, but if you can get it at anthing near that $380 figure, it will be a real bargain! As you guessed, many of these were converted at the factory to sporting rifles, and some were even made orginally for "Foresters" in sporting configuration.
The action alone is worth close to that figure of $380. I'd get back there and buy it, if it were me!
