Dead Bushnell Banner 1.5x4.5
« on: December 16, 2005, 06:34:47 AM »
I put one of them on my 45-70 last year.  It's a M1895 standard model and the loads I shot in it at first were a mild loading pushing the 350 grain bullet to 1550 fps.  Not satisified with the lack of expansion this bullet exhibited on deer I switched to a hotter loading using the 300 grain Remington HP at 1900 fps.  It took 10 shots to get it where I wanted it on my 70 yard range which is more than I thought necessary to lowere impact two inches. Well I missed a 160 class buck the next weekend and a 200 pound feral hog the same day.  I switched to my 308 and then neck shot both a turkey and a slightly larger feral hog. I went to the range yesterday to check sighting on the 45-70 and a couple other rifles. First shot with the 45-70 was 4 inches high at 50 yards, second was 3 inches left.  Went to the hundred yard range, looked thru the scope and the reticle is tilted at the 1oclock-7 oclock angle.  Pulled the scope off and fired a 2 inch group with the factory irons.  So should I send Bushnell a bill for all expenses incurred deer hunting for the last 30 years looking for the buck I missed?

That is the reason I put Leupold scopes on my rifles. Not saying it won't ever happen to a Leupold, but it is a lot less likely to happen.  :D

Considering that scope is well liked by the members at MO for use on 45-70 leverguns, I think ya just got a bad one and Bushnell should stand behind it, give em a chance to fix it.

I generally don't recommend any bushnell scopes below the Trophy line, especially on harder kicking rifles.

In the meantime, yes, send it back to Bushnell for work, but do yourself a favor and get an Elite 3200.  Although on a 45-70, I would also side with Redhawk and get a Leupold VX-II.

You lost a 160 class deer because of a cheap scope.  Would you consider that deer to be worth $250?  If yes, then just buy a better scope.

I really hadn't shot many rounds in rifles mouted with this scope. Around 150 30-30 rounds, maybe 30-50 with the mild 45-70 load and less than20 with the more powerful loading.  In my notes on range time the last time I took it to the range it was on my 30-30 and I noted something about being puzzeled why my favorite loads were grouping so poorly.  The scope could have been losing it then.  I am going to send it back after the first of the year and see if they will just keep it and give me a deal on a higher grade of scope they make.  I'd have to say that I have already invested thousands of dollars in him and yes even a 400 dollar scope would have been cheap if The shot had gone where it wassupposed to.

I used large rifle primers with the hotter loading.  This is the second scope the 1895 has eaten, the other was a 2.5x BSA and it lasted about the same number of 405 grain elk loads.  I like shooting the 1895 better with irons anyway especially with the punchier loads so I am going to put on a peep sight and leave it there.  When I get the 1.5x4.5 back from Bushnell it's going on my 22 magnum Marlin.

rickt300,

What did bushnell do with your scope. Do you have any updates for us?

It came backwith a note saying it had been "adjusted" and the crosshairs were recentered. I tried to mount it on my Marlin 22 magnum and the rear cbjective is too large. I haven't put it on a rifle since I got it back. Imay put it on a 243 to use on predators.
