what is the ideal wolf rifle?

Yukon, I was planning to look for some of that ammo next time I get to town anyway.  But hadn't thought about it for wolf.

Anybody know if the Anchorage gun shops are carrying Leverevolution ammo yet?  

We're getting a lot of snow out here right now. Last time out to check / pull my traps I counted 7-10 moose in a small area. If the snow gets much deeper they'll be wolf bait. Some were plowing snow with their chests the other day.

If you are going into Anchorage, check at Sportsmans Warehouse.  That's where I got mine here in Washington.  $15.50 a box when they have it.  It is so new they may not have it in Anchorage yet.

It is great ammo and very accurate.  Makes the old 30-30 a modern day rifle.  Of course it is not going to be up to say a 06 or 300Win but it should be good for up to 300 yards.  In fact this ammo is the reason I bought a 30-30.  Figued I would give it a try.  Hornady has it out in 35 Rem also and plans to have it for 444 Marlin, 45-70 Govt and 450 Marlin sometime this spring.  I might just have to get me a 45-70 lever gun to go along with my 45-70 H&R Model 155 Shikari.

As for your using it in the brush for wolves it should do the job just fine.

I'll keep you posted on how well it works this year for me.

found some Leverevolution ammo at Mt. View Sports for $17.++ bucks so got one box. Like to support the local stores.

Meant to get to Great Northern Guns and see what their price was on the stuff but never got there.  Last time I checked they had Mt. View and Sportsman's Warehouse beat on some 41 mag ammo I wanted. Got too busy with other stuff to make it to any other gun shops.

Wait!!! I MUST be terminally sick to let that happen! But it did.

I took a brief look at a 7-08 Ruger compact rifle somewhere but just don't have the coins right now.  Plus my wife would use it on me first thing. Seems like a nice rifle. Barrels are awful short.  Hard to please aren't I?

Yukon, where I poke around there is everything from thick alders to miles of open tundra.  But lately there are nothing but snogo tracks and some moose tracks to find.  Spring break just ended and we had a good 14 inches plus of snow fall. The kids were extatic and drove over nearly every open spot they could find.  I wish I had the gas that was burned that week.

So next nice day I need to hit the range and try out this new ammo as well as the 60 gr 223 loads I made. Just made a trip out yesterday - hot dog roast with my boys. No interesting tracks to be found.

OH well, there's always a chance.

My Marlin 336 30-30 Levergun with the new Hornaday ammo is going to be my back up mule deer and elk gun.  Let me know how yours works out with the Hornaday ammo.  I also picked up a Bushmaster M4A2.  Going to set it up for a coyote, sage rats, rock chucks and praire dogs as a replacement for my .223 Handi.  Haven't had a chance to shoot it as yet.

I assume you live in Anchorage.  If so, the next time you get by the New Sygaga Market on the Seward Highway say Hello to my stepson, Bill.  He is the grocery manager there.  Easy to recognize.  Has rust red hair.

Yukon, I'm in Dillingham, sometimes stop by New Sagaya if they have a good sale on scallops.

Haven't gotten to the range - lots of rain, snow, broken snowblowers to deal with.

Friend of mine got out last weekend and sniped 3 wolves with his 22-250 and factory 55 gr.  He's one of those guys who barely knows what ammo he uses but lots of stuff dies out in front of him, moose, sheep, caribou, otter, birds.  15 wolverines last year (trapping). But if the season is open he's out there and he gets it.

I need to quit fussing about my rifle and just GET OUT THERE!  Need a slushmobile right now.

I know its a little late in this thread, but a .243 with a 90gr Sirroco Swift bonded bullet from Remington  set 2.0" high at 100yds will shoot almost flat to 325yds with 1090ft lbs of energy left.  See ranges below:

Talk about flat shooting you could sit clear across a valley and shoot a wolf and he may not know you are even there, with enough energy at 400 yds to take a deer.
There is no comparison from a .5.56mm cartridge to a 6mm.

I have only been to Alaska 2X, will probably go again next year. I am convinced that if a wolf could be a threat, it could also be there maybe others  higher on the food chain about. My polking around the woods would be a 12 gauge 870 slug gun with slugs. If you want to shoot them, wolfs at long range, then I would suggest a 338, a useful maybe do it all rifle. To reload lots of choices, factory ammo available most places.

Jim In Iowa, I'm not worried about wolves bothering me, I wanted to be able to collect a pelt if the opportunity presented itself. In that regard, a .223, 22-250 would be ok in many situations.  

Like fknipfer says, the 243 is a great option. My want  is for a really light rifle because I'd be carrying it a lot and shooting a little. Sure don't want to lug around a heavy gun - I have an old  30-06 Win 70 or Rem 700 in 300 win if I want heavy.

Finally got out to shoot my Ruger 1 in 223 with the 60 gr Noslers - shows a lot of promise. Tried my old 30-30 with the new Hornady ammo.  It goes bang but I need to practice with those iron sights a lot before I'm a threat to much.  Sure do love how light that win 94 is. The Ruger 1 with 6-18 Burris is not a light weight at all.

This has been a fun thread, thanks for all the ideas.  I'm watching for a good opportunity to come my way.
