Modified Choate cheek piece for Survivor.
« on: April 07, 2006, 06:23:34 PM »
I bought a Choate cheek piece for my Survivor but found it needed modification to fit.  The Choate varmint stock must be about a 1/4" thicker.  I thought about filling the gap but didn't want to add weight so I decided to try heating it and bending in the sides.  I warmed the oven up to 190 then increased 10 degrees until I could bend in the sides.  At 350 I finally was able to bend in the sides and now it takes firm pressure to put the cheek piece on the Survivor stock.  Since the Survivor stock is hollow I replaced the screw with a bolt, nut and washer.

Matt, you might have mentioned this in your earlier post, but how was the trigger from the factory. they say they are a lot better now. I was just wondering.

Thanks for the tip, am thinking about a 308.  I have always hated the regular Handi stock.  I was going to give the Survivor a try.

I just worked on it last night and  figured it could save somebody some time.  Took me most of the evening to work up to a temp that would allow me to bend but not melt the plastic.  I was surprised it took such a high temp. before I could work with it.  Anybody trying this should start lower then 350 since every stove is different.   I have the higher cheek piece which works well with 3-9x40 scope I have on it.  When I get my 5-15x40 Elite back from Bushnell it will be going on the Survivor.
