Marlin 17VS - Ejection Problem
« on: January 25, 2006, 09:42:36 AM »
I have a Marlin 17VS and recently purchased (in Walmart) a 7 shot clip for the 17HMR rounds for around ten bucks. Pretty good deal (I thought).

Now the damn thing fails to eject the round about half the time when you cycle the bolt. The round stays in the chamber and the next round in the clip is right there touching the round in the chamber.

I have to eject the clip and recycle the bolt to eject the round then reinsert magazine to continue shooting. Happens about half the time. What causes this? Anyone else even heard of this happening with the Marlin 17VS?

A  buddy of mine just told me he suspects  I'm not cycling the bolt with enough authority. He claims a lot of people do this with small varmint rounds as they are so concentrating on where the rounds are hitting through the scope as there is no recoil & tgt is so small (squirrels).

Hmmm, I've got a 917V and a 917VS, same bolt and magazine as the older 17VS I think, never had a problem with ejection, but did have problems with feeding, easy fix, tho. I just checked RFC with a search, didn't see any reported ejection problems. Maybe just needs a little more effort on the bolt work and a good cleaning of the bolt.

Yes. I thought of that too. I had shot it once before and had trouble cleaning it with the bore snake. I'll wire brush it again with some Outers and see what that does. Thx......

wiggle the extractor with your finger and see if it moves smoothly or binds up or even freezes up.

the extractor is the little claw-shaped piece at the front of the bolt.

Extractor seems to move freely. Will wire brush out chamber and test it. Have to buy anniv gift for wife this weekend so can't hunt but if I cycle them through (live rounds) will that be dispositive or do you think I will need to do spent rounds to really know if problem solved?

(I hate to wait till next time I shoot).

i purchased a 917v from walmart this morning and went to go sight it in and i am having the exact problem...i found though if i wait 30-45 seconds between shots it doesnt do it, so im thinking maybe the chamber is getting too hot or something?!
