Navy/Pedersolli Double Barrel 12 ga.

Picked one of these up at a gunshow today. $250 in unfired condition. I'll be using 1 and 1 1/4 oz shot charges and ffg Goex. It is cylinder bored. What is a recomended powder charge for this gun. I'll be using it for dove, quail, woodcock and hunt club skeet shooting.

Thanks, Dodd. My black powder manual was soaked during hurricane Charlie and I have not replaced it yet.

Navy Double loading

Mine is a Pietta.  I used to have a pedersoli, but it went in a mis-guided trade!  I've often seen that 90 gr./ 1 1/4 load. but don't be afraid of dropping it somewhat, like for smaller birds or clays.  Personally I use 80 gr. but havn't used the gun much on game.

Thanks, Sir Charles. Many years ago, I had a DGW double and seem to recall using 70grains and one ounce loads quite effectively on dove. I also plan on working up a buckshot load in this one for hogs but am unlikely to exceed 90 grains with 1 1/4 ounce load.

Wynn;   I am in the midst of testing some paper cartridges for both shot and roundball.  So far looks good.  i'll be filing a report soon.

P.S.  In case you missed it, I did post my report, three topics above this.

Best results seem to take place with 3/4 to 1 volume of powder to one volume of shot. Since 82 grains of Black occupies the same volume as 1 1/4 oz of shot then you ought to experiment between 60 an 80 grains of powder.

Shot/patterned the gun today for the first time. Got very uniform patterns using 80 gr ffg under 1 1/4 oz of #8's. Did not realize the gun was choked until I started loading and went to push in the overpowder wads.  :o  I beleive it is improved left and modified right. No problem loading but have to be careful starting the wads. Very pleased with its performance.
Busted 17 of 20 clays after we got done pattern testing but had to keep loading for others to try it. By the way; I used circle fly cushion wads soaked in a 7 to 1 Ballistol/water mix and then dried out the water in the sun. Really kept the fouling soft and down to a minimum. Made clean up a breeze. Started using felt wads in the same mix in my revolvers a while back and can shoot at least 8 or 10 cylinders now without binding.
