New Survivor has nice trigger.
« on: April 04, 2006, 04:46:41 PM »
Got a call from Wal-Mart that my new 223 Survivor was in, told the guy I would be right in and he said take your time.  Right, new gun's in and I'm going to take my time.  My Wal-Mart even has a old timer in sporting goods that knows guns.  When I got there he got my Survivor out of the box and he fell in love with it.  This was the first Survivor he had sold and he wants one, but he ain't getting mine.  When I got home and checked out the gun I was surprised it has one of the best factory triggers I've had in a long time.  No creep and broke clean about 3 1/2 pounds, about perfect for coyote hunting.  The guns about a pound heavier then the advertised 6 pounds which seemed low for a 22" bull barrel.  When I ordered the gun I had intended to chop the barrel but I think I'll wait and see if It's a shooter.  If it is I'll send it in and get a lighter weight barrel to chop for brush hunting.  This is my first Handi and  thought I was past buying  "meat guns".  But who wants to take a $800 bolt gun with nice wood  into heavy brush let alone camo paint it.

Thanks one thing that seems odd for a survival rifle concept is the lack of open sights.  I didn't want the rifle for that purpose but if I did it would have to have a open sights preferably a peep.

But hey, who wants to drop $800.00 on a bolt gun when you can have 4  NEF rifles that each have its own story and memories to go with.  Welcome to the world of the oh so addictive Handi Rifle my friend.  :D

I'm not set up for photo's yet beside I want to wait till I get her rigged- up.  I don't want to get crazy on barrels a lighter weight 223 to chop and a 12ga barrel should do it.  However, a Browning A-Bolt in 243 is next on my list.  I do like single shots for hunting but they can be a pain at the range.  Now I just have to wait for coyote and ground hog season to open up in May.

Congrats on the new Handi Mattkc :D

Don't worry about them at the range..they aren't too bad to get used to....I got rid of all my bolt guns awhile back..and haven't really had a problem with these neat little rifles..

Congratulations on your new toy, I got my stainless 223 Handi last week and I was pleasantly surprised when my trigger measured a smooth 2.75 lbs.  I'll be working on some Barnes 53 grain X-Bullets loads using WW748 powder, i'll keep you posted on results.

Took the Survivor to the range today to get the scope sighted in and break-in the barrel.  I bought a cheek piece from Choate but I'm going to have to modify it before it will fit.  I had a heck of a time trying to get decent groups due to not getting a good cheek weld and the bench's at the range are wood.  They are all connected together so every time someone shoots everything vibrates.  I had one of those Delta plastic triangle rest and the Survivor would do a little dance every time someone shot.    With white box 45gr hp's I could get about 1 1/4" and about 1 1/2" with  55gr American fmj.  After I get the cheek piece on and float the barrel I'll drive father to a range that has concrete benches and I should be able to shrink the groups.

Matt:

Loose the hard plastic rest..and pick up a nice little Cadwells dead shot bag..you'll see a big improvemt in your groups when you do..They cost about $18-$20.00 around here..and worth every penny..

I had a leather sand filled bag but it was to low to use with the Survivor stock.  I'm going to rig a wood block to raise it and use some dense closed cell foam on the bottom to try and cut down on the vibration from other shooters.  -
