DO NOT use Serras .204 bullets for coyote!

Lawdog

I finally got out (work has been nuts since mid November) and I downed one (using the 35 grain bergers). In the rush I forgot to get a post skining shot. The coyote was facing me when I shot and I ended up hidding it square on the shoulder (100 ish). The coyote did not move fron the spot, and there was no fur damage, caliber size hole and a destroyed shoulder. I would have anticipated a splash wound but it looked like all of the force went in. I'll try to remember post skining shots next time.

Sort of sounds like Nosler needs to make a 32gr partition bullet huh? Actually, probally Barnes could make a solid copper bullet. P.O. Ackley wrote of some amazing things with the 17's and solid turned copper bullets!

A 55 grain bullet from a .22-250 would have bowled them right over. No offence Catfish, but it looks like another .204 shooter learns the hard way. Velocity (or worse yet, Kinetic energy), does not equal killing power.

I once shot a coyote 3 times with a 25-06 using 90gr Sierra HP's (dunno if
they even make that bullet these days). He finally expired on the last shot.
I later discovered those bullets weren't meant for anything much larger
than a prairie dog.

Bullet construction can have much more to do with "killing power" than
caliber (or even weight) alone.

One of the best bullets made for 20 calibers, Hornady's 33gr V-Max was
discontinued. WHY?? I have the ballistic twin to the Ruger .204, the
Tactical 20, 1/12 twist which is dead on with the loads turning out 4100fps.
The biggest complaint I ever heard about them was making horrific exit
wounds on coyotes if shot nearer than 100yds. Perhaps that's why
Hornady went to 32gr.............but accuracy is not there in my rifle.
There are some 35gr custom bullets in my arsenal that shoot well, but
that guy no longer makes them, and I believe the barrel would need to
be 1/9 to get the 40gr bullets to shoot accurately. BUMMER!!
We need to change our politicians
like we do dirty diapers.............
for the same reason.

With all I have read on varmit and predator hunting is that the 17 is  NOT suited for yotes and the 204 is marginable. However a great flat varmit round , I would not choose for yotes.
Have just started yote huntin and have never killed one, but my choice is my 6mm loaded with 95gr BT. JMO. Good Luck, DM

I am glad to see all of this discussion about he .204 ruger, I have been interested in getting one for varmints up to coyotes. I have a .22 hornet for up to 150 yard stuff, but thought the screeming .204 would be fun to try since it is extremly flat shooting and uses less powder and produces less noise than the big .22s. My hornet is in a TC hangun, so I hopefully I will get one in fairly close this year to see how it works on the yotes, only used it on targets and ground squirrels so far.
The only round I have killed coyotes with personally is a 6.5x55 with 95gr v-maxs. If you are interested in the pelt, do not use that combo! I get a 6.5MM entrance with a 4"-8" hole out the other side. A little too much for coyote to say the least. I am looking forward to getting into some more coyote hunting and despite the negative reports, think I will make my next rifle a .204. If I don't like it, gives me an excuse to get a .223 or 22-250.
For you guys shooting the .204 already, is it true that is is a little quieter than the big .22s or is that just a rumor?

Good shooting,
Brian

Glad we can all still agree to disagree. I took quite a few coyotes with my 204 and 40 grain factory loads. Never had one run off. We are so overrun with them I can't say it would bother me TOO much if one did get away but up until now, none have. I haven't seen any reason yet to bring my Swift back out of mothballs so I'll just keep on smacking them with my 204.
Perception is everything. For instance, a crowded elevator smells different to a midget.

Got my 204 fairly late in the season, but managed to shoot 17 yotes with it. 15 were one shot kills...the longest being 370 yards and a 352 yarder as well.
I'm using the 32 V-maxs with awesome results and great on pelts!!!
Whoever says the 32's don't work on yotes...can't shoot!!
