Question for admin or mod's
« on: May 11, 2006, 03:47:41 AM »
There are some threads (posts) I can access on some days and the others I cannot.  Specifically, here on the the handgun hunting, although I have had the same expereince before in the Thomson Center forum too (It is about  the only two I look at here).
Is it the length/shortness of the post or what?
None of the posts have been locked or any other admin/moderator limitation that I can tell, so what is happening?
I understand now that on some days you couldn't get on at all from a previous question that graybeard answered for me-Thanks.
Is this different or is it same song, but the second verse?

Well Ernie I guess I don't understand the question well enough to give you an answer.

What specifically do you mean when you say you can't "access" them. Do you mean the thread will not open for you to read? Or do you mean you can't post to it?

Is part of the page loading but not all? What if any message do you get?

When it happens are you having the same trouble on other threads/forums on only on one?

Are you logged in when it happens or reading as a guest not logged in?

Bill,
Sorry about my inability to describe it well the first time.  I am very un-techy in this area.
It happens when I am logged in.
It is like it trys to open up then it seems like it gets stuck and after awhile the WHITE screen pops up and says,"The page cannot be displayed."
The it tells you to click the refresh button.
After I saw you responded I first tryed to open the post I started recently "stretching the legs of my new 7mm Dakota..."  I couldn't get it to open.  Then I was able to open this post and respond to it and I was able to open another relatively new post also.
It is perplexing becasue I don't have this problem elsewhere.  Could it be that your website requires more RAM to run smoothly than others and I am just at the limit on my PC?
Long story short  is that it tries to open (I'm not being blocked) then I get the white screen, therefore I can't post anything, even if I refresh it.

OK that gives me a little better feel for what's happening. Some times when I post does that it's because it has a lot of photos or a really large photo file attached to it. Some folks use HUGE photo files and some use photo hosting sites that have really slow servers. Either can cause what you mention.

One other thing that maybe at fault that we're working on is the web ring things at the bottom of the page. We're pretty sure one of them is giving us trouble but we've not yet isolated which. Matt told me the other night when he is here that he is gonna isolate it and get rid of the offending one. We already had to dump the Water and Woods one for that reason. Their server was just too slow and was holding us up.

He thinks it's either the Big Fish one or the Get Bent and he's leaning right now to the Get Bent one. He will have to do a bit of trouble shooting to figure out which but when he does it will be GONE. They aren't really doing that much for us so if they hold up the loading of the site they will be removed. I do think they can bring in some new advertisers from time to time and that's the biggest value to them. They don't bring in enough new members to matter however.

Are you using a dial up or a high speed connection? I'm kinda in between myself. I'm on a satellite connection. It's usually faster than dial up but a LOT slower than either cable or DSL. I see a definite slow down at times. I click, the page goes away and all turns white, then gray and a pause occurs. Then it blinks and then the page loads. Sounds similar to what you're seeing except it does load and doesn't give me a can't be displayed note. We're pretty sure that when he figures out which of the web rings is slowing us down and we make it go away the slow down will too.

About 15 or 20 minutes ago I couldn't get the "stretching my legs" thread to come up either.  I was navigating by the "view next" button and when I got the white screen I clicked "back" and navigated to the "Handgun Hunting" main page.  All was well (it loaded fine) so I decided to try to get to the "stretching my legs" thread from there.  NO GO (white screen with "cannot be displayed").  I clicked on the next post up from that and it opened up fine.

This happened to me the other day of a different thread.  Sorry I don't have any additional info to what xphunter said, but I thought it might be helpful for you to know that the exact thing happened to me too.

I can't get that particular thread to open either. Some how it's become corrupted so I've asked Matt to see if he can fix it. Usually he can open it on his Linux box and do something that makes them open for the rest of us. If any of you run Firefox you likely can do same as his computer with Firefox opens them.

I use hunt101, but I have never had the problem elsewhere and secondly, there have been a couple of times I haven't been able to access this post  (or other posts in the past with no pics) and there are no pics whatsoever.
I know it has to be frustrating for you and matt, but maybe if you understand better what is happening it can be resolved.
This has been going on for quite some time now actually.  I just thought it was my computer, but now I realize it is more than that.
