6.5 X 06 for long range coyotes

I was wandering how the 6.5 X 06 would do on a coyote at looong range?
They seem to be accurate out to 400 yd, Don't see any reason it wouldent do a good job on a yote, That is if you were not interested in saving the hides.. ............Joe..............

Although I have no experience with this caliber in particular the big thing that I see is the knock down power @ 400yds with a bullet weight of 75 to 90gr that the 6.5 X 06 has to offer.

Take my .22-250 for instance, a 55gr @ 3760fps is getting kind of puny at that range. Would be equivilent to or only slightly better than a .22 WMR at the muzzle. The Shot Placement Better Be There And The Bullet Would Have To Expand For sure recovery of the coyotes.

What I dont know is how close of a shot you would want to try in the intrest of the fur. May be that the 400yd would be the close range. :wink:

I have used a 6.5-06 (actually a 6.5-280) since '73 for long range rockchucks and coyotes in Eastern Oregon. Years ago I favored the Hornady 129 gr SP and killed several coyotes out to a little over 600 yards with it. The Sierra 120 SP was second choice. However since Nosler came out with the 120 gr ballistic tip it has been the bullet of choice.

I tried the 100 gr Sierra HPs at 3450 fps but the didn't do all that well at the longer ranges. I found them to be about as effective as my 22-250 for longer range shots.  Though the 100 gr HP did gawd aweful more to a rockchuck than any 22-250 load ever thought of doing.

The 120 Noslers at 3150-3200 fps do the trick out to as far away as you are going to see a coyote and be able to hit the vital area with. the 6.5-06 is an excellent choice for a long range varmint rifle.

The 6.5 X 06 is a 30-06 necked down to the 6.5. They have been made on both the 6.5-06 and 6.5 06 Ackley Improved. The were popular with some of the long range shooters in the past. I find them to be very accurate. They can be made from any of the 06 family brass.

I'd give the 26 caliber the thumbs up for longrange anything up and including caribou and mule deer.

There is a 6.5 barrel for sale on longrange hunting that i considered buying but to change my 25-06 to 26-06 would be sacreligious almost.
The big ballistic tip or 140ish grain A-Max would gitter-done well past 400yds thats for sure.
I didn't realize how much a longrange gun was needed until i went out west a couple times.
With binos i could see praire dogs 7-800yds away ,and there i stood w/a 22-250 pop gun.And here i thought this 22-250 can reach out yonder and knockem dead as long as you can see'um.NOPE.6.5 could though w/high bc bullets.
6.5 is also one of the winningest calibers at 1000yd competitions.Oh well just thought i'd throw my $0.02 in here.Mike

You got it right, Out here in the west you can see forever, All you need with a good Varmint rifle is lots of Glass on top of your Varmint getter.
One of my friends has a 6.5x284 and it sure works good on P-Dogs and Coyotes out there on the lone prairie.Have a good one ........Joe........
