Problem with Ultra Varmint Fluted
« on: April 11, 2006, 01:21:41 PM »
After reading some of the posts I bought a Ultra Varmint Fluted in .223 today. This is one great looking rifle BUT when I took the bbl. off to clean the packing oil from the frame and bbl. a small piece of metal fell out, it turnes out this was the part that holdes the pin that workes the extractor, it was broke in half. I put the pin back in the slot but it is very sloppy now and the extractor only works some of the time now. I plan on calling NEF tomorrow for a new part but I will not send my brand new rifle back, I haven't even fired it yet. This really makes me mad, what kind of quality control do they have. When I bought this rifle I also put a NEF rifle in .50 S&W on layaway as I couldn't afford both at once. Now I wonder is this a indication of there quality. Anybody else have this problem. Thanks for letting me blow off steam. :(  :x

This sounds like a simple problem. I said this before if you want to shoot a Handi rifle you have to be a handy man. Quality control is not one of theire strong points.

I have a couple of handi rifles and the few problens I have had were all pleasantly taken care of by the factory.  Hope everything works out for you too.

Curious..you say the part that operates the extractor was broken and you put it back in and is now loose?

Could you post a picture of this..??? I sure would like to see what part your talking about..I only see 3 pieces inside the extractor area..and 3 pins holding the entire assemly together..a toggle..the extractor..and some spring steel holding pressure against the extractor..

The part is a toggle I believe, The part that broke looks like a thick washer. A pin goes through it and activates the extractor.

Called the factory today and talked with the gunsmith, the part that was broken was the yoke. He is sending me new parts ( no charge ) They were very nice about it and I changed my mind about the company. I also picked up my 500 S&W today, so far I am very happy with it it evem came with fiber optic sights. I was wondering will the receiver sight that comes on the Buf. Classic work on the 500 S&W and would I have to change the front sight, it is now high and I lick the red fiber optic. Thanks

That's great news, but not surprising, their CS is second to none, and has a well proven track record here!!!

The Williams WGRS sight that is standard on the BC, will mount in the two rear scope mount holes, as far as height, dunno, but you will probably want to loose the plastic front sight anyway and swap it for a Williams fiber optic sight, read the Peep and Fiber Optics sight thread in the FAQ and Help sticky for more info.
