260grNoslerPartitions(.375)...any experince on brown bears?
« on: March 26, 2006, 03:02:58 PM »
Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone has any first hand experience with the 260gr Partition on brown bear and moose in Alaska.  I'm thinking the 260 will give me some distance over the 300gr.  Going in 2008 and will be shooting a 375HH and was wondering if there's any real experience out there with this bullet.  I've taken moose in Newfoundland before with a 300win and 180gr partitions with complete pass through broadside on every shot.   Just wondering if the distance benefit with the 260gr is worth it on the bigger moose and a brownie.

BTW...I can shoot other bullets for sure...just an academic question.

How far away are you willing to shoot at a Brown Bear? If the first shot doesn't put it down, someone may need to go into the brush and finish it off. Were that me, I think I'd want to be close enough to place a very good shot the first time yet far enough to take a second if necessary. I'd rule out any shot over somewhere around 100 yds. At the same time you might have to take the shot at 10 yds, in which case I'd want plenty of power and penetration. Think I'd go with the 300 gr.

Of course this is all a bunch of mental masterbation as I've no intention of going looking for trouble with a brown bear intentionally! They are much to good at getting rid of anti dope's that think they are cuddly little critter's; the bears even clean up their own messes!

I believe I'd lean toward the 250gr Barnes X or the 270 Barnes TSX. both have a higher BC than the Nosler and better penitration. Two holes let in more cold air, and drain blood more on a criter you really don't want to follow into the thick stuff. What Don said about long range is good advise also.

Thanks guys!

I think you're both right about long shots on brownies.  I suppose hunting them is much the same as hunting moose, distance wise.  I can't imagine shots will be much further than say, 80 or so yards at the outside.

I just bought about 200 nosler 300gr partitions, so I'd like to use them.  I certainly have some time before I go and I'm going to shoot buffalo this fall as a kind of test of penetration.  We'll just see I guess!

Well it's up to you but I  totally agree with Dave375HH.
But no matter what you use make sure it is a bonded bullet.
Good Luck

My partner shot a .375H&H for years.  The only bullet he shot was the Nosler 300gr period.  He took many Moose, Brown Bear, and Interior Grizzlies with that gun.  The only reason he does not still shoot it is he moved up to a .378 Weatherby.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

No experience with bear but I was in South Africa for a week in April with 9 other hunters.  I used the Federal Factory Ammo to kill blue wildebeast, wort hog, and smaller critters, one hunter shot through and through an eland.  Of the 10 hunters all but one used a 375 rifle or encore handgun and of them all but one used the nosler, all performed very well.  That being said for a big bear I think I would go with the 270 triple shock.
