why I carry a gun
« on: November 11, 2008, 11:57:01 AM »

My grandpa said to me son,' there comes a time in every mans life when he stops bustin' knuckles and starts bustin' caps and usually it's when he becomes too old to take an ass whoopin'.

I don't carry a gun to kill people.
I carry a gun to keep from being killed.

I don't carry a gun to scare people.
I carry a gun because sometimes this world can be a scary place.

I don't carry a gun because I'm paranoid.
I carry a gun because there are real threats in the world.

I don't carry a gun because I'm evil.
I carry a gun because I have lived long enough to see the evil in the world.

I don't carry a gun because I hate the government.
I carry a gun because I understand the limitations of government.

I don't carry a gun because I'm angry.
I carry a gun so that I don't have to spend the rest of my life hating myself for failing to be prepared.

I don't carry a gun because I want to shoot someone.
I carry a gun because I want to die at a ripe old age in my bed, and not on a sidewalk somewhere tomorrow afternoon.

I don't carry a gun because I'm a cowboy.
I carry a gun because, when I die and go to heaven, I want to be a
cowboy.

I don't carry a gun to make me feel like a man.
I carry a gun because men know how to take care of themselves and the ones they love.

I don't carry a gun because I feel inadequate.
I carry a gun because unarmed and facing three armed thugs, I am inadequate.

I don't carry a gun because I love it.
I carry a gun because I love life and the people who make it meaningful to me.

Police Protection is an oxymoron. Free citizens must protect themselves.
Police do not protect you from crime, they usually just investigate the crime after it happens and then call someone in to clean up the mess.

Personally, I carry a gun because I'm too young to die and too old to take an ass whoopin'.

BIG DOG 454, where were you when the people were calling me to their homes to clean up the mess? I spent 20 years in L.E. cleaning up messes, and telling people to HELP THEMSELVES.
In that 20 years (5 years SWAT leader, 3 years Narcotics, 7 years Tactical K-9), not one time did I get a list to pass out at shift change, of where and when all the crime was going to happen.
911 is not the answer. YOU HAVE THE ANSWER! I am not a fat guy, but a big guy. HOWEVER! With all the injuries I sustained in those 20 years, I qualify for dis-abilty, and refuse to even apply. I jokingly tell my wife, that as I am about to turn 60, that every morning when I get up, there are a bunch more thugs out there I can't whip, than there was yesterday. I saw a lot of fist fights and deemed ALL of them stupid. When we showed up, we showed up to win, not be macho.
Americans USED to think like that. Good post, and the author, understood REAL life.

It really is a shame most of the really insightfull things put into print
don't get proper credit.

I have to say I agree with all the reasons given.
And I'd vote for anyone who showed this kind of reasoning in real life  ;)
Because this person lives in the real world unlike most politicians.

I couldn't agree more.  Most of the students that come through my concealed carry classes think the same way.  I really hope that the whole country hasn't gone socialist with this last election, but that is sure what it looks like.  At least a few of us believe in being responsible for our own safety.

I carry a gun for the same reasons I carry a spare tire and life insurance.
I hope I'll never need either one!

While I enjoyed the read and appreciate the thought the author put into it; I carry because in the end, I'm the one responsible for the safety of my family and myself.

Nobody is going to defend you except for you. Anyone that invades your home and your family is a danger. There was a local case here that the subject broke into the home, armed, tied the father up, and raped his 11 yr old daughter. If that wasn't enough, he took the time to fire up a crack pipe and burn two rocks before he left, leaving the pipe on the living room coffee table. That's why you should carry a gun.......and if you ever see our agency's crime lab you would never let your child outdoors again without a parent. Protect your loved ones, because everything else is after-the-fact.

Dee,

:::::: You said it brother. Thank you for your service. I'm not done yet. Have a few years of the stuff left. You do it so much you end up with a divorce, you see your kid every 1st, 3rd, and 5th weekend and a pet rabbit that steals your socks. Yet, you wake up everyday to get to the job. What a life... :D

BIG Dog,
Great post. Says it all for me.

By the way Docmag, the socialists in this country will be the first to cry for help after they give up their (and our) rights. I have a few in my family and they are educated idiots... too stupid and complacent to realize the real danger we are in. The liberal media evidently don't realize that they will be eliminated right after the guns are gone.

Fun shooter, you are exactly right RKBA is the only thing that allows the idiots the space to spread their socialist crap.  When the guns are gone, freedom of speech, assembly, and religion are not long to follow.  Have you ever heard of the FAIRNESS DOCTRINE?  It is a scheme, out of the pit of hell in my opinion, to force religious broadcasters, and others, to give equal time to opposing veiwpoints.  The new congrtess wants to resurect the idea.

Well, no, the liberal media will never be in danger so long as they continue to print what they are told and they have been doing that very well so far. ;D
The story of David & Goliath only demonstrates the superiority of ballistic projectiles over hand weapons, poor old Goliath never had a chance.

If I was in a position of importance where I needed a bodyguard or required protection from our brave Secret Service, I would want them armed.  Bad people are everywhere we have the right to arm ourselves for protection, just like our elected servants must be protected with and by any means.  I can't afford a bodyguard, therefore I am my family's bodyguard.

I carry because I like choices. I already had "RUN" and "BEG" pretty much nailed so I added "FIGHT".  A 50% increase in choices.   Lawsuits have proved that the police have no legal obligation to protect you. The primary job of law enforcement is to find and arrest the person who killed the guy inside the chalk line.
