454 Super Redhawk new setup with pics
« on: April 10, 2006, 08:56:18 AM »
I finally got my 454 Ruger Super Redhawk setup recently. I installed a Wegand scope base with three magnum rings holding a Burris 2X Posilock scope. The grip is a coco bolo Hogue from their auction site. It is supposed to be a cosmetic second but I have yet to find the problem.
Range sessions have been great. It is putting six 300 grain Hornady XTP HP's into 1.5" at 100 yards from sand bags. This is with a H110 load that is pushing 1600 FPS. From my Polecat monopod I can put 3 rounds into the kill zone of an life size deer target from 0 to 150 yards with no problem fairly rapidly. I also have a load using 300gr. LFNGC's from Cast Performance Bullet Co. that also uses H110 and produces 1680 FPS. Accuracy with it is 2" or under at 100 yards.
With these two loads I should be ready for most any game I will ever shoot. We have some extremely large hogs on a lease I hunt in SC. Some of them go 400 lbs. The hard cast bullet makes me feel better about them.
The Burris 2x scope has been great so far. I have noticed that with the Posilock lose the zero will drift slightly in 3 or 4 rounds. However, with the Posilock tight it will stay rock solid. I usually shoot 50 to 75 rounds at a session.
I am looking forward to hunting with this new toy.

I really like this site but you have to watch closely as not all guns have grips on there all the time. I got my grips for about 1/3 of the price of ordering from Hogue directly. As I said I have yet to fine the cosmetic problem except that where the grip haves are glued together the CNC driven router chipped the wood. A defect so small I had to find it with my finger, then I saw it. All the better, I got a great chunk of wood for peanuts.

Really nice setup!  Good luck with it!  If you don't mind me asking, what is the recoil like?

It is a lot more than the Super Redhawk in .44 with max loads but it is not unbearable. Shooting it offhand I found the recoil fun. It lets you know you have a tiger by the tail. I doubt I would ever even know it kicks if an elk or hog was in the scope. Off of sandbags it flips up quite a bit. The line between not holding it too tight and interfering with its recoil and holding it firm enough to keep it from splitting your skull is a narrow margin. Like most rifles, it is more punishing off of the bags than in the field.
