762x39 owner ?
« on: April 13, 2006, 02:39:30 AM »
:D Here is my Question? The 762x39 handi will not shoot surplus ammo because.....The firing pin can not reach the surplus ammo primer right?Or is IT because the surplus ammo has to hard a primer???762x39 owners how much more length on the firing pin will it take to touch off surplus ammo.......1/16?   I'm thinking about sending off for one of these for my handi frame and I will have them send me a new firing pin so I can make it longer....(template only) What do you guys think? Also what kind of groups is anyone getting? Thanks Dale

New Idea for fix
« Reply #2 on: April 18, 2006, 12:04:46 PM »
Hi    3006bluffhunter,

I cam up with the shim idea after buying 1k rounds of wolf ammo for my new handi just before I had picked it up and did not know about the primer issue.  I think that it is a combination of both the hardness of the primers and the depth of recess.

I ended up making a shim that folded around the transfer bar and held itself in place by its own spring tension.

My origional transfer bar is .150" thick.  I gradualy increased the total thickness of the shimming to about .021" ( .171" Total) and was able to get reliable ignition in my rifle with both wolf and other brands. There was no descernable difference in the appearence of the struck primers  either with or without shims.

My dis-satisfaction with the idea was that if I failed to check the shim before each firing there was a chance that it would ride up on the transfer bar and be struck between the hammer and the face of the receiver thus dammaging the shim and causing a failure to fire.

My next task will be to fabricate a new transfer bar with a thickness of about .170"-.172" and try again.  As long as the firing pin does not extend beyond the face of the receiver when the transfer bar is in its lowered positionn everything would be safe.

Because of an intensive work and school schedule I have not been able to do this yet.  If there is anyone who can make a new bar even if it is not hardened please let me know.

Let me know how you make out

Paul
