How strong is a #1 action

How strong is a number one action?  Could it handle a Weatherby cartridge?  Thinking about rebarreling to .338/378 Wby.

Ruger's No.1 catalog # K1-H-BBZ is listed as handling the .458 Lott cartridge in a 24" barrel. So yes, it can handle it.

The Lott cartridge is considerably smaller in diameter than the .378 case, so it would put much less force onto the action, in fact no more than a .257 Weatherby would.  That said, I believe that the No 1 can handle the .378 case fine; custom rifle makers chamber it to similar cases (SSK, Reeder, etc.).

Lone Star, Ruger also lists the No.1 in .416 Rigby with case dimensions  very close to that of the .378 Weatherby Magnum. Of course, the chamber pressure of the .416 is 46,000 psi vs 60,000 for the .378 Weatherby. The .458 Lott's pressures are more like 53-55,000 psi. In any case, the No.1 can handle it.

It "may" be, based jonly upon its design.  But cast metals lack the ultimate strength of forged steel, assuming top quality in both.  Had Ruger made the Number One out of forged steel, I'd be more likely to agree.

The rifle's real shortfall is its weak extraction.  Sticky cases can tie up the action but good.  A quality front-locking bolt rifle is still the best for pushing the envelope.

While Ruger was testing the action for strength, they took a 45-70 and loaded it FULL of Bullseye powder behind unk bullet weight and fired it. Absolutely no damage to the action. I would guess that test would make the Number One the strongest action currently available. The test was written up in an old Gun Digest.
