Author Topic: Light loading 300 RUMs (Read 255 times)

I was looking in Hornady's 6th edition and saw the 300 RUM loading data. They had loads as light as 110gr running at something like 3900fps. Was wondering if anyone has played around with this or how light they have gone. I have a hunch the 110s may get a bit loose from a standard rem 700 barrel but don't know for sure. I bought some 150s to play with. Will let you know how they fly.

Ok nobody is loading the RUM light, how about any loads that have been played with.

One of my younguns is loading the 300 RUM and enjoying it. By "light" ,are you talking of bullet weight or powder weight?
If by light bullets,he's played with some 130 gr HPs. I don't know how fast or anything like that but I do know his rifle didn't shoot them into the same zipcode! It may have been the powder,the rifle,etc. Who knows? His rifle seems to like the heavier bullets (180 and up) best. Makes ya wonder if it needs all that bearing surface to stabilize.

Yes I should have emphasised that I meant light bullets.

I use 180 grain and 200 grain pellets with my 300 RUM. 80 grains of IMR 4350 yields a muzzle velocity of 2980 fps with 180 grains bullets and 77 grains of IMR 4350 gets me 284o fps with 200 grain bullets. My 300 RUM is very accurate. The muzzle velocities I stated are chronograph figures.
