6.8 Rem for Contender

Found some barrels listed as 6.8 Rem for the Contender.  I would think this new round would be too hot for the Contender.  Anybody know about this?  If it is not too hot, it would be a good choice for a young deer hunter.

The 6.8 spc (Rem) is an excellent Contender cartridge. Low pressure & good velocity. Thompson is offering it in factory barrels, they would not offer something that wasn't safe.
If I lived where I could use it for Whitetail, I would buy one in a second.
From what I have seen here on GBO, there aren't to many people that are interested in it.

I've been shooting one in an Encore, and its an excellent round.  Recoil is minimal, and accuracy has been pretty good.  Brass is finally becoming relatively cheap, and there are quite a few good bullets out there for it.  It should make an excellent whitetail round, which is what I plan on using it as next season.

Looked up the 6.8 mm Rem SPC in my new Hodgdon book and it shows some starting loads above 47000 and max loads up to 54000 PSI.  How much pressure can a Contender frame handle without damage?  If the frame can handle the 6.8mm R SPC pressure at 54000, why canÂ’t we use a lot of other rifle rounds?  

The 250-3000 Savage is said to be too hot for the Contender, but itÂ’s max pressures are less than 45000.  I just donÂ’t understand how it is too hot but a load at 20% higher pressure is OK.

Anybody know the answer?  I just don't understand this.

Part of the equation on how much pressure the Contender can handle has to do with the diameter of the cartridge.  A smaller diameter cartridge will leave more metal around it to contain the pressure than will a larger diameter cartridge.

I have one coming from T/C in exchange for a 16 1/4".414 Super Mag that couldn't be repaired.  Mine is going to be the 23" rifle barrel.  

Scrounging for loads now.  Midway has brass and loaded ammo.  Barnes has an excellent 100 grainer for the 6.8SPC (.277).

Several factors to consider when setting pressure limits on the Contender.

Head diameter....6.8 is smaller head diameter than the .473" of the .250 Savage, .308 etc.

Shoulder angle ....if applicable, sharper reduces the back thrust or so the theory goes.

Backthrust is the common cause of frame stretching.

Special Ed,i think that its not that many people are not intrested in the round, i think that its so new that many havent heard of it.I know i love mine so far.Im just waiting for some dies, and then i can share some load data.pan.

Hi jason280 I am planning on useing the 6.8 spc for whitetail also. I first thought of it for my young nephew, but I am enjoying my thumbhole stock 23" bull barrel 17 HMR set up so much I may use it myself ( at least some of the time ! ) What bullet are you thinking of useing I can go factory ( of course :roll: ) or hand load. Thanks John.
