375 h&h 260gr Federals Nosler AccuBonds
« on: January 09, 2006, 04:21:47 PM »
I been doing some research on those 260 gr Federal accu-bonds... they seem to have very nice balistics (.473 BC).  I am planning a trip this coming thanksgiving (Going to alaska for the first time in my life) and The area i'll be hunting with has bears (what kind of bears... i don't know, its trip to meet my family)..... I know this is african hunting forum, but I figured any bullet that works well for african dangerous game (cape buffalo / lion / and such) should also work well on Alaskan big bears......  So whats everyone opinion / experience with the federal 260 accubonds

thanks

I have not seen them used by any of my hunters so far in Africa. I do know that the Swift Aframe is without exception the best 375 diameter bullet I have ever seen in my whole career. I will not likely switch from that ultra dependable bullet unless somekind of magic bullet is invented.

In the last 5 years my rifle alone has taken 200 head of big to friggen huge game including rhino with the swift Aframe. My rifle is used a lot as a loaner in my hunting camps, thats part of the reason so many animals have been taken with it.

When in any doubt about a projectile for big stuff use A frames!

Wow JJhack, you used swift-a-frame to take out the "big nasty" ? you mean to say you don't use FMJs with the 375 h&h ?  Well I will defenetly honor whatever you say, you seem to be a PH around GBO and I will take into consideration whatever input you have to say

thanks JJhack

For the record, many of the bigger animals like Elephant, hippo, rhino are killed or shot with both Solids and softs. in many cases multiple times.

One reason I use the Barnes X bullets in my 458Lott is that they are like a semi expanding solid bullet. They seem to bridge the gap between the soft and the solids.

Buffalo are nearly always shot with softs and when I was working in Alaska all Brown bears were shot with softs too. The only three aniamls I have know to really be better off shot with solids are the hippo, white rhino, and elephant. I have a soft here From my rifle that I took out of a single shot elephant kill. So the softs will absolutely do the job when the aim is true. This particular cow had it's trunk wrapped in wire and had pulled about the last third of it off. It was angry and sick. It was shot in the head and dropped at the shot.

I found remingtons 300 gr swift-a-frame pointed-soft-point.... they are a little expensive, about 60$ per box.  I did some reading on their structure, those swift-a-frame expand nicly and I like how the momentum in the butt of the bullet pushes hard into a thick-skinned animal while the middle layer is made of hard-copper

260 Nosler

I recently returned from an SA hunt.  There were 10 hunters, 54 head of game,  and all but one had either a 375 H&H or a 375 wildcat encore.  All but one used the 260 Nosler bullets.  They killed everything from duiker to eland.  I dropped a blue wildebeast with one shot to the chest at 130 yards, an other hunter put one through and through an eland chest.  They probably do not have the penetration of the A frame but they are good to go on plains game.

I have not noticed all that much different between the 260 Accubonds and the Swift Aframes.  The original Release of the accubonds was not great with some kind of metal bonding problem. However the most recent bullets are very good.

The Aframe is a stronger bullet with the partition design, but for plains game either one is very good. The Aframes in my gun have been much more accurate and shoot the same speed with 10 additional grains.

With the much less expensive bonded core bullets on the market today I'm not sure how long Swift will be in the game. It seems a shame that the best products which cost the most to produce seem to go away.

Winchester is a perfect example, wilderness experience packing gear, Swift Aframes??? how much longer can they hang on at the price they charge?

400 gr. Frontier Solid

What do you think about Frontier`s CS Game 400 gr. in a .375 for the big animals?

I get good accuracy with different powder - and the velocity is beetween 1800 and 2000 fps.
