Any good reduced loads for a 35 Whelen?
« on: April 17, 2006, 05:51:05 AM »
For powder, I've got some IMR SR-4759 and Accurate Arms 5744.  For bullets, I'm thinking about the Hornady 180 grain Single Shot Pistol bullet, the Remington 200 grain Core-Lockt, and the Speer 180 grain Flat Point.  I want to duplicate the velocity of the 35 Remington.  Also which primers would you recommend?

Try IMR's SR4759

Barm:  I don't have a 35 Whelen, but I have had excellent results using IMR's SR4759 powder in a .358 Winchester  - it is an excellent powder for light loads and  IMR's web site gives load data for using it in a 35 Whelen:

My loads have used CCI #200 primers with no problems.
Thanks, Dad, for taking me into the great outdoors.

Pagris,

How was the accuracy and how much did the point of impact differ with the lighter loads?

Does Well For Me

Barm:  Sorry for the delay in gettting back to you.  I have found SR4759 to be very accurate with any of the .308 based cartridges - just the other day I shot a sub 1" group @ 100 yards with a Browning BLR .243  using SR4759 with 80 grain Hornadys.  In fact, some of the best groups I have ever shot have been with SR4759 - though I will admit that I do not consider myself to be an accurate shot.

The point of impact changes that I have noticed are minimal - perhaps 2" lower at 100 yards.

Good luck with it.
Thanks, Dad, for taking me into the great outdoors.

This may not be what your looking for , but I'll pass it on anyway. There is an excellent article by Ken Waters in the Feb 2000 (#203) issue of Handloader. Under his "Pet Loads" titled Loading Big Game Bullets for Deer. For cartridges In the medium bore range, his criteria was to duplicate the .358 Win.

       .35 Whelen
200gr. Sierra roundnose  IMR 3031 52.0     2455fps    2676ft-lbs
                                     IMR  4064 55.0     2486fps    2744 ft-lbs
250gr. Speer spitzer        IMR 4064  53.0gr   2358fps    3085ft-lbs
I added the 250 from the article because thats the bullet I've had extremely good luck with in my Whelen. A current prod. 1895 Winchester Rebored from a .270 Win. He doesnt state which primer is used, but in my experience any std. large rifle will work. In fact it is not a very temperamental cartridge to load for at all.  Hope this helps.
