Remington rollingblock? number 4-?-7-??
« on: April 20, 2006, 05:08:18 AM »
I traded for a Remington rolling block as a kid. It was originally a 32 rimfire but the barrel has been cut and the bore is pretty bad. The rear sight is still in place, just a standard dovetail mounted rear(front's gone). The weird thing is the action has no rear tang. Where the top tang on the #4 action would be there is a shelf machined into the top rear of the receiver and an undercut towards the front. There are 2 holes drilled and tapped to attach what looks like sone kind of detachable tang?? On the bottom of the #4 there was no tang as you know. On this action there are 2 holes(drilled and tapped) on either side of the trigger guard and to the rear. There is also a shadow on the action therre that suggests the presense of some type of bottom tang being attached there..  All the work looks original to the gun. It is an early #4 with the threaded barrel and no takedown feature.  While the bore is ruined and the barrel's been cut the action is in beautiful condition with most of the original(?) blue.. Any ideas?  The only thing I could think of was it may have been a #7, remington's target version of the #4. Unfortunately I've never seen a #7 and the photos I've seen don't show the details.. Anyone here have any ideas??  I'm at a loss..  Thanks for any help or idea..

The #7 was not a version of the #4. The #7 was actually closer to a #2, but even closer yet to a Rolling Block pistol. It had an extreme drop to the tang area, and a pistol grip stock like a RB pistol. A #7 also has the scalloped rear edge to the receiver, like a #2 or a pistol, rather than the squared off rear edge of the #4.
Imagine this picture with a buttstock coming off the bottom of the grip frame:

The No.4 doesn't use the trigger plate but the No.2 does. The action I have doesn't have the trigger plate. It is squared of on the rear but there is no top tang. It's not broken off but has been replaced by a flat cut with an under cut as would a dovetail. There are 2 screw holes drilled/tapped into the flat(horizontal) portion of this cut. There is also no pivot pin retainer as on the No.2. I am certain the action I have is a No.4 but the milled flat(there are also the screw holes drilled into the action bottom) leaves me to wonder. Has anyone seen actions(rollers) with the rar top tang removed or made removeable?
