New 30-30 Handi
« on: April 23, 2006, 05:49:50 PM »
Finally put a new scope on my 30-06 bolt action so out to the range Saturday sighting it in with a heavy but accurate 165 gr load. While there saw a new little 30-30 NEF Handi with open sights on sale for $169.99 in the store.  Got home and my wife ask what I did to my face. Evidently I didn't shave real well and the cheakplate of that model 70 rubbed my face raw, not to mention my shoulder.

Back out again Sunday to re-sight my H&R bull .223 in on the cheap 45 grainers. Gave up on hand loads for a while, just going to let the thing shoot what it likes.

But first, went into the Alpine Range store and bought that 30-30!

Can't wait to get it back out. Got to put a scope on it, my eyes are long past open sights. I even have scopes on my 30-30 lever actions now. Already loaded up 20 rounds of Nosler 125 gr ballistic tips I had for the 30-06 with 34.5 grains of IMR 3031 and put in an order to Miday for a box of Hornady 150 grain SP. I know I've got to be carefull and not put to much pressure on that old 30-30 case design but this is going to be fun.

Bet I can get that 30-30 as accurate as the 06 at 100 yards and enjoy it a whole lot more punching paper! Might even try it on a white tail or two later even though it's hard to beat the 06 for that.

Yes, a 30-30 in something other than lever action is similar to a 45-70 in a modern rifle ... a hand loaders dream. Didn't take much to get me to bite ... $170 was all I needed. Been hand loading 30-30 for years so it was really a no brainer.

Of course already have a H&R Special Edition .223 which I think is identical to a Ultra Hunter. Haven't been real impressed with it yet but can see that receiver getting shipped off and fitted with a 25-06 bull barrel real soon!

Not that we wouldn't like to see a .25-06 bull barrel, but they don't offer one.........yet, but we've asked!!

You're right, I didn't notice that before. May be a good thing ... not as heavy with 26 inches of barrel.
