Fobus does make a holster for the K-Frame. I shoot with a guy that has a very, very old K-Frame SW and he just got a Fobus for it. I don't think it would work for the Dan Wesson though - what you say is true for the leather holsters, and for the competiton style holsters like the safariland, but holsters like the fobus are fitted very closly to the specific shape of the gun - fobus specifically has a very tight fit, and since they are rivited they aren't adjustible.
I will be seeing him next week, so I'll bring my DW along and see if it fits, but I doubt it will.
If you want a kydex or plastic holster because you are planning on shooting IDPA or something like it, you might consider blade-tech. They are more expensive, but definitely worth it - they also take a while to produce one, but again, are worth it. I know they make a holster for the new Dan Wesson .44's . If they don't produce one for your gun, they can custom fit one.
