270, 280, 30-06 Which one???
« on: April 20, 2006, 11:46:55 PM »
I have narrowed down my selection to ONE of these three!  I want a rifle with OPEN SIGHTS and English Style Stocks and I am trying to decide on ONE of these calibers.  I realize that it will be a CUSTOM barrel as none of these come with OPEN SIGHTS.  The rifle will be used for deer and possibly varmits.  Some deer hunting may be from a Stand,  some in the North Woods and some in the Bogs.  I also plan to spend a fair amount of time just shooting at the range.

I don't want to debate the Pros and Cons of Scopes vs Open Sights on this thread.  I just want to know which one you would choose if you were setting one up this way.  Thanks

For open sights, I personally like a little shorter barrel. So I would say either 270 or 30-06 on this one.
If ya scope it though, I would take the 280 I believe.
Are you going to reload for it?

Anytime the choice has a 30-06 involved there is only one answer. 06 hands down.

All three are very close but the 30-06 has more bullet choices especially in the heavier grain weights that are ideal for close in, open sighted hunting. You didn't include it in your calibers but the 308 is also excelent for this. Same bullet choices with about a 100 ft per sec slower velocity than the 30-06 which it makes up for in accuracy and less kick. Not that the 30-06 is not accurate, my bolt action is very accurate with hunting loads but I pay for it at the rifle range. The 270 and 280 are kickers too. In fact I think my sons 270 with a kick pad kicks harder than my 30-06 without a pad.

How much recoil do you enjoy?  If that's a factor, you might want to consider the smaller bores.  While I've hunted with an 06 for over 30 years, and I don't recall my rifle ever recoiling at all when hunting, I do find the recoil objectionable when shooting from a bench.  Great hunting caliber (perhaps the best all around!) but a little beyond the limit of what I consider "fun to shoot."  YMMV.

Hard Choice your dealing with Cookieman..but..Thanks to Quickdtoo's link...looks like what you want is just a phone call away all set up and waiting for ya...and for a super price as well...:agree:

Go for the 270...it does has some real nice varmint bullets available..and even a match bullet to play around with..If you were going to scope it..after my morning shooting session with the 280...I would recommend it whole heartly..

If it was just a matter of choosing a caliber, I'd always vote for the '06. (In fact, I feel the Classic 30-06 Springfield is so near perfect, every shooter should have at least one!) But here must agree with Mac. Considering your desire for a straight buttstock and open sights, the above linked 270 is too hard to pass up. Go for it.

My hunting buddy uses his Handi 270 for everything. Bring it up here and we'll take you out to kill an antelope.

I'm still thinkin on buying one just cuz they were $203 last time I looked at it! To buy the stock set IF it was available and pay the extra $50 for the sights on a barrel from NEF would be considerable more total cost.

$176!!! What a deal, used SB2 reciever          -  $55-$75
used laminate stock set  -  $65-$85
(if you can find a straight set!)
                              used .270 barrel             -  $60-$80
(if you can find w/rifle sights)

I figure it would cost a minimum of about $180 for the used parts plus shipping, maximum about $240 plus shipping. All the parts would be used and you would hope they can be easily fitted. The straight laminate stock and rifle sighted .270 barrel make it kind of unique, and again, what a deal!!!. I wish I had the extra money and I wish I wanted a .270, however I have niether the money or desire at this time. I know I will be kicking myself next year!!!....<><....

Hmmm ......

I have no idee if yur a reloader, no mention of that 'sport' .......

Don't want glass on the rifle.

Want a fugly limey-style stock .......

All three rounds excell with a glass sight and lots of velocity .......

Open sights imply looser groups and closer ranges .......

.30/06 hands down! Open sights will give you minute-of-deer accuracy out to 200 yrads or more (if your eyes are that good).

.30/06, .30-30, and .270W are the three most popular big game cartridges in Norte Americano .......

.30/06 is the most versatile .......

.30/06 all the way!

I've killed over 20 BG with the .270W (elk, mulies, and pronghorns), so i know that round is no wimp.

The .280 is a big sister to the .270 and a reloader's dream, but that's the key to its success ...... rolling your own for it!

Of the three choices, the .30/06 is the "ford, chevy, mom, apple-pie choice of the rounds listed!"

Man $176 set up the way he wants in 270! The only thing better, for me,  would be if it was 30-06 or 308 but you cannot argue the effectiveness of the 270. I'd buy it ... and just might anyway.

To bad that place is in Arizona and not Texas so I wouldn't have to pay the fee of having it assigned and shipped to a licensed local gun dealer. Of course if it were in Texas would have to pay local sales tax. I've never bought a rifle that way. What does that cost? My guess would be $15 to $20 plus another $10 to $15 for shipping. Still comes out to a very good deal.

Shipping for me is $19 and my dealer charges $20 transfer fee. Pick a fee and an FFL from the list.

Open sites on any of the three calibers mentioned would limit their potential greatly.   I would go for the time tested .30-30 myself with that stock and iron sites.  Just my  :money:

Sorry for the slow response guys.  I ended up out of town for the weekend.  Helping relatives, of course!

I forgot all about that 270 at the gunsource.com.  I also forgot about including the 308 in my list of choices.  Not recoil sensitive, but less recoil, would not be a bad thing either.

I don't plan on reloading at this time, so, yes...price of ammo is a consideration.  I didn't include the 30-30 because I wanted something with a little more punch.

Thank you all for all the input.  All valid and very much appreciated.

As far a transfers is concerned, $10, for me.  What a price!

Thanks again all.

Ufta!  That price is almost as much as H&R wants for fitting a new barrel, plus $47 for installing a set of sights!  What a deal!
