Why do scope manufacturers make small objective (20mm) scopes with 30mm tubes?

For example:
Leupold Mark IV 1.5-5x20 MR/T, 30mm
Schmidt & Bender 1.5-4x20, 30mm
Zeiss VM/V 1.1-4x24, 30mm
Burris EuroDiamond 1-4x24, 30mm

Doesn't the smaller front objective negate the benefit of a 30mm tube?

It's a European thing. They can only buy aluminum tubes in 30mm size. Anything larger or smaller than that can be used to enrich uranium.

Why not a 30mm minimum objective then?

There are many products that I can't understand...The cough muffler for example.  What's next, the fart muffler?  Where would you put the tube? The wind indicator is another one that is just baby powder in a nose spray bottle.  My favorite is the processing kit that sells for $9.  It's just a pair of cheap surgical gloves and a 50 gal trash bag. :-D  They build them for suckers I guess.

I'm not exactly sure but I think the 1" tubes have less than a 20mm objective lens even though they say they do.  The ones you mentioned have 30mm tubes outside diameter and have a true 20mm objective lense.  If you look at Burris's scopes I believe they have a straight 2x with a 20mm objective on a 1" tube.  If you look closely they have slightly larger bell on the front to accommodate this.

Just my 2 cents,

Josh

Well a 30mm tube is stronger and they can fit more adjustment into it. Next in metric 1" is 25.4mm which is an odd size which is why a lot of the european scopes were actually 26mm tubed however this caused problems in places when unimformed folks screwed them into normal 1" rings and damaged the tubes

Now to fit a true 20mm objective lens you need more space to thread the tube and then the lens carrier. Regardless of the objective size a 30mm tube will allow more light through to the eye than a 1" tube will.

Light is same same.
30mm tubes allow  more MOA adjustment.
