Brand new encore bullet extractor question
« on: April 26, 2006, 05:15:50 PM »
Hello,
I just put my brand new stainless/synthetic Encore with a 26" 30-06 barrel together.  I tryed putting a round in the chamber to see if the rifle would eject it like my old NEF handi rifle used to.  It doesn't.  In fact, it's kind of a pain to get a shell out.  I first tryed with empty brass and then a loaded round.  I was expecting the empty brass and the round to pop out once the action was opened but it didn't.  Is there something wrong with my rifle or is this how they all are?

Yep, that's what an extractor does. I've heard of an ejector setup on Contender bbl's but don't know if anyone has ever made one for the Encore.
Hurrah fer mountain doin's- :D

Shouldn't the spent casing fly out on its own once the action is opened?  My NEF handirfle used to throw out the empty brass.  I had just thought the the encore would eject the brass rather than just get it out just barely far enough.

There is a difference between an extractor and an ejector!

An extractor merely pulls a cartridge far enough out of the chamber for one to pick it out with their fingers!

An ejector actually throws the cartridge out of the chamber!

As long as the rifle is working the way it is intended to is fine with me.  I was just thinking it would eject the empty round instead of just extracting it.  Sounds like it's doing what it's supposed to so I'm content with that.

Mine has a gravity ejector.  I open the gun, turn it upside down with the barrel pointing up, and shake it like hell.  The shell just falls right out!

That's one reason why Rimmed cardtridges work well in these break action guns. On the rimless cases the extractor has to be spring loaded to push up against the bottom of the case and slip into the extractor groove so you have to pull it out over the pressure of the same spring. (If that makes any sense) :?
