Need a 310 grain FN-GC-DC 44 mag load
« on: April 12, 2006, 04:08:53 AM »
Guys,
I just ordered 500 bullets from Montana Bullet Works.  I will be using them in a Ruger SBHH.  Does anyone have any loads for this bullet.  I checked the Hodgdon Manual but it only has the 300 grain XTP or  a 325 grain LBT data.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

You should be able to start with the starting load for the 325 gr safely and work up from there. YOu also need to know what the BHN of the bullets are. This will give you an indication of velocity you can safely attain without excessive pressure or leading.

blklabs, I have one load in my notes on a 315 gr. hardcast with gas check.  My load was 18.5 grs of H-110 in Winchester brass, CCI mag primers.  This load clocked 1325 fps. out of my 10" contender and grouped just  over 1/2" at 50 yds. ( that was the best part!).  I do know my contender for some reason won't even tolerate loads that are fine in my S&W 629, so I would expect them to be fine from a Ruger, which seems better handling heavy load than the S&W.  You definately should work up to it though. Hope this helps.

There is a REAL problem with generic loads for such heavy for caliber bullets. That problem is how much of the case is occupied by the bullet and how much is left for powder? Ya see there is no standard really for such cast bullets and one company's 300+ grain bullet may take up a LOT more case capacity than another does. Thus you can jump pressures to astronomical levels fast using data for some other bullet in heavy for caliber applications without knowing the relative amount of bullet inside the case for each.

ASK the bullet maker for starting load data.

I, as a rule, don't post load data on the internet. I did post a link to a site with that information, that I have found to be reliable in the past. Still, I would exercise caution using ANY data not found in the bullet manufacturer's published loading tables. The bullet weight is but ONE variable in the loading equation. I would encourage anyone reloading, to seek out current and accurate loading information from a reliable, published source. Enjoy reloading safely!!
