Youth rifle for a south-paw?
« on: April 02, 2003, 11:05:19 AM »
I'm going to start looking for a single shot bolt action 22 rimfire rifle for my small grandson... problem is, he is left handed. Do any of you guys know of a youth rifle that is available in "south-paw" versions?

Savage makes a little lefty .22 boltgun, about $125 if I remember right. Whether it's short enough is up to you but I wouldn't hesitate running the radial arm saw over it to make it fit.

I bought a NEF for my left handed 9 yr. old grand son and he just loves it.  I put a 4 power scope on it and it is very accurate.

Dave,
I'm sorry if I sound a little nosy, but why do you need a left-hand action for a single-shot 22rf?  I grew up with a Remington single that was "right-handed" and never knew the difference???????

The NEF/H&R's are part and parcel of Marlin Arms.  They make the Sportster model in .22rf S, L, LR, 22WMR and also .17 MRF.  They are not bolt-actions, but single break action.

Nope... you are not being nosey at all. Isaac is about as "left handed" as anyone I have ever seen. He is also left eye dominant for what it's worth. He has trouble handling ANYTHING that is made for right handed people... I've given him guitar lessons on a right handed youth guitar that I switched the strings on, and he even had problems with that. He is a really good little fisherman, but you should see him fumble with a non-ambidextrous reel... he can hardly do it at all... but give him one that is left handed, and he is murder on crappies... My thinking is that if I start him with a left handed bolt rifle, then when it's time to upgrade to a real hunting rifle, it will be easier for him. Of course, if I go with a New England style (break open) or a lever action, then the problem is more or less solved. However, I prefer teaching him with a SINGLE SHOT bolt action for several reasons, and just know that he will be more successful with one that fits him not only in size, but for a south-paw... Just IMHO

Dave,
I understand totally.  I was one of those south-paws that was sorta "ambi-clumsy".  I took to a right handed bolt gun, then used a right-handed reel in bait casting tounaments (cause as far as I knew they were made just right for me!)....cast with the left, reeled in with the right hand on the crank, never switched hands, and was a guitar player with the right hand holdin the pick and the left hand doin' the fingering!  Just made dollars and cents to me$$$$$$  But lefties come in all flavors.  Personally, I always favored lever-actions (ya, like you figured that one out!!!)  Good Luck with him, and always remember.....Lefties are in their Right Mind!!!!

Jim........Guitar picker, bait castin', birds' nest pickin', black powder shootin' ole fool.
