is legal to use dum-dum's (notched FN or RN ammo) for hunting? i've done this once but a friend of mine told me it was illegal.

If you are talking about notching FMJ amo, I guess it would be a local law you'd have to check in to. As far as I'm aware, there are no Federal fingerprints in this area. Years ago, my uncles used to do it regularily.
The bullets, so modified, expand really fast, or theirs did. Shallow penetration was what they were getting.
SAFTEY ISSUE
I remember reading of a chap that ground the points off of FMJ bulets for 303BR. The result, was when fired, the core went out the barrel, leaving the jacket behind. Second shot, boom.
Most FMJ 303Br amo I have seen has no coverage of the lead at the bullet base.

the rounds i used where winchester-western super-speed. they where 220 gr. flatnose .303

220gr 303???
Really? .311 bullets soft point, in 220gr? (not 308) Rare item! Use them sparingly, good moose medicine. Don't waste them
I'm a little suspiscious, as the usual weight is 215gr for the 303, and no major bullet maker is making them right now, only expensive premium bullet makers.

when i brought the gun and ammo home from the farm there was no box and i was told it's either 215 or 220gr and i only got one left so i'm gonna save it. i've tried to find these rounds at gunshows but no luck.i did pick up 50 rounds of .303 fmj with strippers and bandolier for 25 bucks these weekend.thats what i think is a good deal!

With any Military amo, espescially 303, be carefull of corosive priming.
Berdan primed amo is particularly noted for that. Clean imediately and thoroughly after shooting. Some guys even use boiling water to clean. I think thats over kill myself.
