.308 Survivor updates
« on: April 26, 2006, 05:20:21 PM »
I just got a .308 Survivor, and I'm comparing it to my Springfield M6 Scout.  I like the small size and sights of the Scout, so I plan to cut down the barrel of the NEF to 18", and add a set of iron sights.

Questions:

1) Assuming shots will be taken at 150 yards or less, will reducing the sight radius from 22" to 18" have any appreciable impact on accuracy?

2) Will muzzle blast increase substantially if I cut the barrel from 22" down to 18"?  I realize this is subjective, but the only input I've gotten so far has been from guys who shoot FN's and HK's.  Their receivers are longer than the NEF, so of course their muzzles are farther away as well.

I sure appreciate any input.

Thanks, Dutch

:D  The muzzle blast will increase for sure. My question why cut the survivor it's only 38 inches tip to tip and installing irons sites still leaves it a compact rig. I have one and love the copmact size of it. For me iron sites never work at my age the sites just stay fuzzy if you know what i mean. Jess

I like the smaller package of the Scout, where both peices don't exceed 18 inches, but with the extra power of a .308.  Sort of a just-in-case gun.

Any time you shorten the sight radius, you stand a greater chance of lesser accuracy.   But keep in mind, the difference is only 4 inches and there are a lot of accurate 18" barreled guns out there.

It might take a little more fine tuning to get the same group as a 22" but it can be done.

You can gain some of that sight radius back by mounting a receiver sight, especially if you are willing to d&t your action. And of course if you ever mount a scope then the decreased sight radius means nothing. I've shortened several rifles and shotguns and never regreted it.
