First meteorite found with GMT
« on: December 31, 2006, 06:29:34 AM »
Got my GMT a couple of weeks ago in a terrific trade for a Ruger New Model BLackhawk and finally got the chance to go out with it to see how it works in the field and not just in the parks. Worked for about two hours with no results then ran into another GMT owner who helped me with my settings. DUH!! Twenty minutes later I almost lost hearing in both ears. WARNING!! Do not wear headphones when searching for meteorites!

A couple of the guys returned to camp with some 30 grammers, one guy had a 102 grammer and of course I show up as a NEWBIE with one over 300 grams. I am still waiting for my new 500 gram scale so I can weigh this puppy as my 250 gram scale went into overload when I tried to weigh it. I guess luck plays a BIG part in the game of seeking these space rocks but then again I sure covered a lot of ground in those 3 hours.

Check out my best and last find for 2006! Can hardly wait for 2007 so see if I can top this one.

Have a safe holiday season and may your detectors sound off like mine did!

How do you KNOW it's a meteorite?

First, its highly magnetic! Second, if you file off a small nick you will see tiny particles of nickle/iron showing and best of all I had verification from three people who hunt these guys all the time.

BTW, a buddy of mine who is a teacher at UNLV took it in and showed it to one of the professors there and they made me an offer to buy it. No way! this is my FIRST meteorite so I will hang onto it.

Finally got it back from my buddy at UNLV and they definitely confirmed it is a Meteorite and that the total weight is 300.4 grams. Now all i have to do is get it classified.
