More news from...over there.

Drugs are now allowed in certain quantities for personal use.

*snickers*

"Personal use"

Now that's a pretty funny politically correct term for "satisfying drug addictions."  It seems though that drug sales are still illegal.  Geez, if the sale is criminal, is not the product also criminal?  I guess they don't understand that concept?

I think Vacente Fox (His real name in Spanish is ZORRO) is leading mexico in the wrong direction.
Where is old Joe when we really need him?  Alaska Independence    Calling Illegal Immigrants "Undocumented Aliens" is like calling Drug Dealers "Unlicensed Pharmacists"
What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Now some of the drugs that are brought across the border will be more available to the average peon, so that it will help pay their travel expenses. I wonder if they can deduct that?

Maybe it will keep the Mexican's that are addicted to drugs out of America. But I doubt it, like nomosendero said, the drugs will more than likely give them even more leverage to get here. Maybe some of our own drug addicted criminals will run to Mexico for easier accsess to their dope.

This could be a win-win for us! We still stop what we can at the border, and deport our drug addicts south instead. This has real potential!

Legalizing drug possession in Mexico will probably increase the illegal drug business activity north of the border as well, unfortunately.

Personally, I've long thought that legalizing and taxing/regulating many "recreational" substances across the US would be a relatively good idea. Much like the prohibition of alcohol served only to finance the business of illegal organizations, the illegal drug trade produces far more damage to our society than if the same wares were available to interested parties from licenced vendors. Across the nation gangs would be out of business overnight, and the cost of incarcerating ever more offenders in the trade would be quite a reduction in the tax burden to all of us.

There would be an increase in addictions and DUI problems, of course, but isn't there plenty of such evils from alcohol abuse already? I think the increase would be the lesser of two evils... what WOULD diminish is the robbery, murder, etc. of innocent victims in order to finance one's habbit, and the slaughter of eyewitnesses to the crimes related to illegal drug traffic. Even homeless winos can panhandle enough to maintain their daily habbit, so too would those addicted to other substances if they were available legally with the competition based pricing that would ensue.

I don't know about anyone else, but if this were to pass I for one would certainly not suddenly become a cocaine or heroin addict simply because it was readily available. I'm no alcoholic, either even though it's sitting there waiting for me anytime.

:x I don't use, nor do I condon drugs, I have witnessed first hand the impact it has on individuals and families.  I have also been of the opinion that it may be wise to legalize drugs in America.  I think it could help in several ways if properly adminstrated.

First, if the outlet were set up like a drug store under strict government control, and the user had to produce photo evidence in order to buy, then a data bank could be built to identify users.

Second, if legal, and sold at a rersonable price, the crime element could be removed from durg use.  If some of the hard core dealers were put out of business it may reduce some of the crimes users commit to support their habit.

:D Hammerspur.  I could go along with that, but alcohol is legal and accepted in society.  I readily admit, there have likely been more families destroyed as a result of alcohol use as there has been from drugs.

We could debate this issue for years and never reach an agreement on which does the most damage, but today alcohol does not contribute to  crime as drugs do. And the long term effects of alcohol is not as damaging to the mind as most drugs are.  My support of legal drug outlets is simply to establish a means of creating a data base to establish an audit trail to determine how drugs are getting back to the 9-10 year old kids on the street.  And you have to admit, the criminal element of America runs the drug trade which directly contributes to the overall crime rate.  JMHO.

Drugs have a history of being condoned by the general population much the same as booze.
I have no doubt that marijuana would not create any more problems for the population than beer and that it would create the same problems as beer.
I wish legislation would prevent abuses and stop addiction, well, I took off my rose colored glasses and I can see much better now, but it will not.
I prefer some amount of legalized controls, though that does not stop the bootleggers.

If the illegal sale and possession of drugs was eliminated the major evils associated with their use would also evaporate, including the subjective labels which would then have no basis in fact at all.

As far as alcohol being less damaging to the mind and body, I don't believe that is so, at least in reference to the major narcotics. Ecstasy, LSD and poisons like those are not the substances which the illegal drug trade operates on, and are not addictive substances anyway... the physiology of the body does not develope a tolerance and dependence on those atypical kind of chemicals the way it does with alcohol or the opiates and cocaine.

In terms of affecting the mind, alcohol is every bit as damaging as those other two. Just try to reason with a long time tippler even when there is no readily observable impairment.

I've worked in the human service field for over 30 years, including alcohol and drug detox and rehab services. A cliche in the field of treatment states, the substance is not the problem (at least initially) it's the SYMPTOM.

Persons who become dependent on ANY psychoactive substance are from the outset psychologically un-well individuals engaging in 'self-medicating' to ameliorate the unpleasant perceptions and sensations they experience in the course of life, experiences the rest of society is able to endure and deal with without the aid of continuous medicating.

Remove the legal and resulting financial impediments to ordinary procurement of presently illegal chemicals and you have nothing more than another flavor of what already exists in alcohol abuse. It's those impediments and the cultural/sociological taboo's that go with them that color the 'other' drugs differently.

Well now, the drugs have long been with us (to include alcahol) and supression is more costly than taxing.
I have no less thought than supression just does not work.
I do not think man can legislate man from self destruction.
I would think that knowing what is going on to be easier if it were controlled than trying to find out whatis going on.
I have no condemnation for anyone who would consume alcohol, well to the point of addiction and constant impairment-the same with drugs. There are folks who are legally hooked on drugs.
I guess I am just one of those who would say that you cannot protect folks from themselves and you can't stop folks from things that will happen in everyday life.
