Single Six Owners...which brand of ammo?
« on: December 27, 2005, 05:15:06 AM »
Just bought a 5.5" Stainless 22lr/22wmr Single Six yesterday.  Was wondering which 22lr ammo shoots best out of yours?  Figured asking you folks could allow me to buy 4 or 5 different ones instead of having to try ALL the ones available.

Thanks,

Jim

Mine shoots as good or better with the Wal-Mart 550 round bulk pack Federal HPs than any other ammo. At $8.97 for 550 rounds, it's hard to beat.

I've had excellent accuracy with this stuff in a bunch of different rifles, and handguns. I've yet to find a Single-Six that didn't shoot it well.

Thanks Jerry!  I will check to see if my Wally World carries this bulk Federal stuff.

Ditto to Jerry,

Just about all my .22's shoot the Federal Bulk Pak really well. I have not had good luck with the Winchester Dynapoints in my rifles, though, and some folks swear by them. I think you will find the Single Six is not quite as accurate with the .22lr as the magnum since the barrel is sized for magnum which is slightly larger. I have shot a lot of the CCI CB's in mine and they are deadly on the wild possums around my house. Super quiet, too. I also put Hogue grips on mine because I like the larger grip. Same grip fits it as the Blackhawk, believe it or not.

Greenjeans,
I didn't know that about the barrel being a little bigger??!!  Are you familiar with that too Paco Kelly sells?  Not only does it flatten the point, but can increase the bullets diameter to better fit the barrel...  Would you think that would be money well spent since I plan on mostly small game hunting?

Thanks,

Jim

22 long rifle, shorts, etc. are .222", while the 22 magnum bullets are .224". They bore the Single Sixes to .224" so the pressure stays within limits when shooting magnums.

In my experience, the 22 LR rounds generally expand enough to seal in the barrel, and deliver good accuracy. You sometimes run into accuracy issues when using sub-sonic rounds or other low pressure ammo. As far as small game hunting, I kill a lot of squirrels, rabbits, and such with mine, and the Federals, or most any other 22 LR ammo generally thumps'em as well as the flat point ammo I've tried. Altering 22 LR rounds is just way to involved for me to justify the effort for such a small difference in performance.

Dakota, sorry to be late seeing your question, but Jerry gave a better answet than I would have. I haven't been on much for the last couple of weeks since it has been so hit and miss with being able to move around and post. I also shoot CB's in mine and they are plenty good for pests at close range in the back yard.

I have the same Single Six and it is probably the least finicky gun I have.  It's favorite seems to be the Aguila SE subsonics.  The Fedrals bulk ammo shoots quite well too (best deal in ammo I'm aware of).  CCI CB even shoot well enough to pop a starling when the opportunity arrises.

A cylinders worth of Aguila SE Subsonic at 25 yards

The 5.5" is about as close to perfect as they make for a Single Six.  Love mine. :-)

I put whatever .22 ammo I have around at the time through my 6, and it shoots it just fine.  Never had a problem with it.

A neighbor had a baggie filled with several different types of .22, and I shot it through my single six.  They shot well, and eveh grouped fairly well.

Since getting my single six my Buckmark sits.  To much fun!

:cb2: The beauty of a .22 wheelgun is that it will shoot anything, and usually pretty well. Not the case with automatics. Subsonic loads of any brand tend to do great, and I have had great luck with the Winchester Wildcat cheapo ammo. I get out my drill and hollowpointer and make hollowpoints out of 'em. The very best results have been with Federal Classic ammo. But I doubt you'll have any trouble with any of 'em.

Gee, that was a lot of help!  :-D

Try the Federal jacketed hollow points in the bulk pack from Wally World...  My Henry H001T and my Ruger Single Six both shoot these bullets extremely well.....and they are CHEAP!!!  550 for $8.96, I believe.

Same here! I also have a 5.5" stainless Single Six and it is a great match for the Federal bulk.

I like the Federal Bulk as well, my Single Six shoots many brands well, but none som much better that they can beat the price of the Federals.  They do a dandy job on targets, cans, squirrells and varmints.
