just a quick question..... Has anyone considered rechambering oh say a .223 to 5.7x28 FN round?

The .223 is way larger in dimensions then the 5.7x28 case.  

I cant say for sure without some research, but te .22 Hornet chamber might clean up to a 5.7x28.   ....for about the same performance.

Not unless you can shrink the .223 chamber, the 5.7x28 is close to 22 Hornet in size. Just buy a 22 Hornet and spend the extra money on ammo! :wink:

Even the 22 Hornet chamber is unsuitable. Why would you want to chamberr for such an odd ball cartridge.

The Hornet case is 1.389" (35.28mm) let alone a 223 which is 1.760(44.70mm)

With such a tiny round the 22 mag. bull barrel may be a good choice if the bore and twist would work or even a 17 HMR bull barrel to bore and re-chamber .

For the cost to do the work you may very well just want to just buy a 22 hornet and be done with it . But it will be something to think about .

This idea came up in conversation with a friend. So far, all the points that have been mentioned I tend to agree with but, it would seem to me that the 5.7x28 out of a properly set up rifle barrel would wind up being somewhere between the .22hornet and the .223. I do not have any ballistics info but I do find it an interesting possibility. Comments? feel free!       Stu

Well, if you're for the challenge..  I'd get a .22rf barrel to rechamber to the 5.7x28mm as being Fred pointed out that the .22 Hornet wouldn't cleanup.

Then refit the barrel to an SB2 receiver.   Not sure what you could start off with for the ejector/extractor.   Ammoguide.com shows the rim diameter as being 7.84mm(0.30866"), plus probably needing an additional 1/16-1/8" for it  to catch the rim for ejection.

If you want something between the hornet and the 223 take a look at the 221 fireball.
