DO-it Yourself Elk Hunt
« on: May 20, 2006, 01:37:41 AM »
MY son and I are trying to put together a self-guided elk hunt.
I've been hunting on several guided hunts, but the cost is just becoming to great for the working man. So we're looking to go in 07'. Presently we are looking at Colorado and Idaho, because elk tags appear a little easier to get for non-resident.
Any body with any helpful hints or suggestions?
Any GB members, residents of these states with ideas on what areas to hunt ,etc.

Seriously, I would take the year to learn how to bowhunt and then go to Idaho.  Went to Idaho on an solo archery elk hunt last year and had such a great time.  Best part of it was that I was in a ton of elk and never saw another hunter.   The problem with firearm season is that the woods can get really crowded; especially in Colorado.
If you want to do a firearm hunt, I would look for a limited entry unit and start applying every year until you get enough points....  Only way I know how a do-it-yourselfer can get away from everyone.
In Idaho, there are a whole lot of elk...  I would suggest going on the fish and game website and look at all the information on there; ton of information!  Also, contact a big game biologist and ask for suggestions...
  Good luck!!!!
