My new rifle rest
« on: May 06, 2006, 06:24:25 AM »
Here are some pics of my rifle rest that I built. I am "thrifty" , actually I have a wife and two little girls, so I have to save whenever I can. That and I like to tinker with stuff. I tried a friends store bought rest, and liked it, but my handi rifle did not. If I rest it close to the hinge pin, the groups are around an inch. If I rest it out in the middle of the forearm, the groups open up to sometimes greater than 2 inches. With my buddies rest, it was setting about in the middle if the forearm, so cruddy groups it was. So, I did a little engineering, and volia, here is what I came up with. I havent tried it yet, and I still have to weld the "T" section on at the front of it. Its is made out of unistrut, which is a product that allows you to mount conduit, plumbing pipe, and whatever else you can think of. (all of you in the construction trades know what it is) You could build it without welding, as they have a T connector that you can use. I have about 5 bucks in it, I got the strut from work, so all I had to buy was the bolts and turn buckel. The swivel bracket up front is from a cctv camera, but I sure that you could find something else, or eliminate it completely. I also had the buckskin that the rest parts are covered in.
I made it to adjust from 100 yards on up, and it only fits my handi rifle right now, due to the height of the rear rest, which I plan on changing, to fit my other rifles, present and future.

And here is a pic of my shootin bench that I made. It is an old black and decker workmate (30 years old) that has been abused alot. I took the brackets that hold the boards on, and removed them, adn added a 3/4 inch piece of ply wood for the top. I also painted it, it didnt look to good with 30 years of different colors of paint on it. [/img]

Well....... It doesnt work to good. The rear rest was to low, so I had to stick a couple of empty shells under the back of it to get it on target a 100 yards. I didnt weld the front "T" on it yet, I just clamped it to my bench, which wasnt bad, just un handi. (pun intended) The front and rear rests need to be be filled with sand or lead shot, the buckskin covered wood doesnt hold the rifle very still. And I need to make the rear rest adjustable, that way I can use it with other rifles. Back to the drawing board I go.
