475 Linebaugh vs 500 S&W

Bill no mention of the wife
nomosendero i  believe he still does I know we tested some.
simplicity. Yest it may but pushing cast bullets that fast is counterproductive. If you need more power then a 475 420 at 1400fps then id agree step up to a 500 with a 480 at 1400. But your getting no better results with cast bullets pushing them to 1900 as a matter of fact pentration will suffer as bullets at those speeds will deform no matter what alloy there cast from if they hit bone.. The 500 linebaugh is my favorite big bore. But i have to admitt that with simular weight bullets at the same speed the .475 will outpenetrate it. As a matter of fact the 475 is proably the best penetrating big bore on the market. I cant tell you scientificaly why because im not a scientist or a ballistics expert but i know that weve done alot of pentetration testing and ive witnessed alot more testing and the .475 will usually come out on top if not its definately in the top couple.  Ive never bad mouthed the 500 smith its a fine round if loaded properly and it puts the big bore guns in the hands of people that otherwise couldnt afford it.

what on earth are you guys trying to kill here.
jurassic park is just a movie.
what won't die from a heavy cast bullet in a .44, 454, 45-70, 460, 475, or 500?
just gotta be sure of bullet placement.
put em where you want em

Blklab, don't listen to the rest of these bozos, they don't know squat!! :D  Take it from a guy who has been there, seen it, done it and bought the T-shirt.  You actually need AT LEAST one of each, and preferably a nice selection in different barrel lengths. :)

just got to chime in here a bit, but i gotta tell ya, i've got 2 FA 454's, had 2 taurus raging bulls, and then have had 1 super redhawk 454 and just recently got to handle a bfr, i would've been the first to agree with lloyd but evidently the quality of those guns has gone way way up in the last few years.  the couple i got to handle and shoot recently have changed me around on that.  if you want a .475 i'd go with the bfr in a heartbeat.  not quite as nice as a FA but i've yet to see anything that is.  the bfr was clearly a nicer better built gun than the rugers i've seen recently, in the past, period.  it's about on par with a few customs i've seen as far as how tight they lock up.  i'd have no hesitation to buy one for the prescribed $800 plus dollars.

I haven't seen a BFR in a while.  Have they done something to improve the gun or are they just getting better at building them?

yes, they have changed several things.  at first i got the impression that they were after a novelty type item with the 45/70 etc.  then they came out with other calibers and tried to enter the "normal" big bore market and not go after novelty type shooting.  i'm calling the .45/70 a novelty item b/c they're the only one to make one, not cuz it's not a great gun.  however, they've changed the source for many parts most importantly the cylinders, they've improved and changed the shape of the grip frame, and based on the examples i handled in 2001 or so, definitely improved the fit and finish on the guns.  much tighter, better triggers on average.  just a very nice all around improvement.  just goes to show, if you put out an average or crappy product, it will take a while before people take notice when you improve the quality. the ones i handled before weren't on par with rugers imho, but they are better than rugers now imho.  i first took notice when john taffin tested the .475 and got some insane accuracy.  i contacted him to see what the deal was and he told me that gun was as accurate as any he'd shot, including his FA.  the ones i handled weren't as tight as FA, but they were not any less accurate in my hands shooting off hand, whereas, my cousins' that have had a couple blackhawk .44's were noticeably less accurate.  one day i'll have one in .475 but i've got plenty of .454's and that's quite enough gun for anything.

The pre-2000 BFRs were made by D-Max for Magnum Research and have DM as the serial # prefix.  The post 2000 guns are far superior in fit, finish and quality.  I believe the post 2000 serial # prefix is "J".  I will check and update this post.
