Tanning a snakeskin
« on: June 30, 2007, 07:46:03 AM »
Have a couple of large rattlesnakes frozen from last deer season.  Is there a simple way to tan them at home.  Want to give them to my grandsons.

Would like to keep it to a "do it yourself" job.
Thanks for any help.

good day to all. go to your pharmacy and get a bottle of glycerine. paint it on 2 times a day for about a week or so and after that about once a year. I have a 6 footer that is about 8 years old and is holding up well. if it is kept in a bright room the diamonds will fade but the skin stays soft. take care.........Bill

What is done to the skin before you paint it with the glycerine? Anything?  Tacked to a board, scraped, salted, rinsed? I have one in the freezer that needs done and want to get busy on it.

Howdy, I apoligize for the late reply . combination of computer probs and 2 jobs and camping keeps me away from here for a while. All I did was skin it and stretch it on a board with pushpins , salt it a lil bit and put enuff glycerin on it that it soaked thru. Good luck.......Bill
p.s never rinsed cause I had cut the head off and bled it before I skinned it
