Can someone help with this ?
« on: July 24, 2006, 09:54:57 PM »
Howdy All
The search seems to be down so I figured I would ask if anyone remembered it. I seem to remember something about someone killing a bear with a 22. I am not sure but I think it was some place on Graybeards forum here but I am not sure. Does anyone remember anything about that ?

The reason I am asking is on another forum someone said something about it but said it was only a untrue story. I seem to remember that a link was given and it was a true story. Any help would be great :-)

Try Rimfire Central. Those guys like to brag about lots of stuff like this.  Just remember because it can be done doesn't mean it should be.

Oh I agree 100% anyone who goes after any bear with a 22 needs their head look at a LOT. But some times life just does not give you a choice in what you have to do. I am just trying to find that story I seen some place that said it really happened to some lady.

No doubt there is a difference between having no choice and setting out to do something dumb.  Good luck finding the story.

It has been mentioned here plenty of times in the past. However I don't recall there was ever a link to a story with any of them. It's possible it's true but I think it falls more into the "urban legend" category even if it has actually happened at some time.

Here is you a story.
Coweta county Georga about 30 years ago, right across the river from my house
a lady in her late 70's shot a black bear out of the tree beside her house.
The bear got after her cat, cat and bear went up the tree, little old lady hit the
bear with a .22 long (not long rifle) at the base of its skull at the spine.  Bear hit the ground dead.
rifle was a Stevens "Crackshot" single shot. Range was about 20 feet from a window of the house.
I have heard of others, but they were not verifyable. Bear was not too large though, not sure of actual weight. Perfect bullet placement... Talk to some of the old farmers or ranchers around
where you all live and ask them how they used to kill cattle or hogs before slaughtering them.
many will tell you a .22 to the head. That is a lot of critter to drop with a .22 but they sure do it.
Not advising anyone to do it,(shoot a bear with one) but with perfect bullet placement is has happened.

I don't recommend rimfires for much over woodchuck size.  I have centerfires for a reason.  But I guess if you have to save the cat and a .22 is what you have then use it.

My pistol coach tells a story about a woman in Africa who was a marksman with her .22 pistol that saved her life in an attack by using her target pistol to kill 7 or 8 attackers.  She was able to place the shots perfectly.  I wonder if I could stay so calm...

I know of one more verifyable incident and it was in Alaska.
It happened so quickly that there is not a lot to the story though.
Trapper was running his line, turned a corner on a small stream.
bear charged and he pulled and fired. Pistol was a High Standard
semi-auto. the shot turned the bear and they both ran in opposite directions.
bear was found dead the next day with a shot through its left eye.
Not an instant death and I am sure the fella' would have been mauled
except for a lot of luck or the grace of God or both.

I put up a post last June in the hog hunting forum, and it has had replies up to June of this year.  Someone posted a reply with a picture of a Canadian First Nations woman who had killed a grizzly with a .22 single shot.  She was hunting grouse and saw a bear trailing her.   She sat beside the trail, hoping the bear would pass, and popped it in the head with a .22 Long, if I remember correctly.  Unfortunately, when the data was migrated  to the new format, the part of the thread with the picture of her and the bear's hide was lost.  If you want to read what is left of the post and the responses, look for "A Clean Conscience and a .22 Magnum ".  I am sorry that I do not remember the woman's name.

I also remember a story about 2 or 3 yrs ago , where a guy killed a Tiger somewhere in Asia with a 17 hmr.
22's and other rimfires have killed more stuff and people than all other rounds combined, if i remember reading the findings correctly.  But i am not going to be hunting lions, tigers or bears (oh my) , with a rimfire any time soon.

For what it's worth, Peter Capstick wrote of a couple of instances of African bull elephants being killed with 22LR.

FWIW, the picture of Bella the bear killer is back on my post from last year, along with yet another reply. Isn't modern technology wonderful?
