Chevy ABS woes
« on: October 10, 2004, 07:30:15 AM »
I have an 01 Silverado 4-wd. with 57,000 miles.  About 1-1/2 years ago ABS light went on.  Shortly thereafter (Ca. 35,000 miles) I needed to replace brakes but ABS light stayed on.  I was told by G.M. dealer after scannng the on board computer I needed a new motor for ABS.  It would have cost $500+ so I decided against having it fixed.  Eventually took it to neighborhood shop who simply fixed the old motor which only required a new wire.
Now that this was fixed, faulty ABS sensor now engaged and created a very dangerous situation as truck crept to final stop.  It seems that when ABS was not working, the sensor problem did not show up, but now that ABS was working, the faulty sensor showed.  This is a $650+ repair job so I disconnected  the ABS. Since then my neighborhood mechanic has replaced several other sensors.  We can`t believe G.M. does not recall this as this is a very dangerous situation unless the ABS is disconnected.  Funny thing is the brakes themselves will pass inspection & it is illegal for shop to disconnect ABS.  How many here have had this experience?

I've had brake problems on my 2000 K-2500 since it was a year old. Local dealer says nothing wrong; then blamed it on one size over on tires. Truck came with 245's and I put 265's on. I don't trust the brakes fully, so always give myself plenty of room to get stopped. Check around the net. You'll find you aren't the only one with brake issues on these trucks.

As for GM recalls; Just got one last week on the tailgate restraining cables. Both cables broke within the first 2 years. It's taken GM awhile to admit a problem that has existed since at least 2000. This truck, with 80,000 miles on it is now relegated to woods use.

Just went back to Ford for the 1/2 ton and will replace the K2500 with an F-250 next year.

RebAl,  I guess you and I are the only ones with brake problems, since I've unhooked my abs fuse, my brakes work fine, except now my dash board looks like a CHRISTmas tree with red an yellow lights all the time, atleast I trust my brakes now.

I see in the paper today the government is gonna check into GM's ABS brake complaints. Its about time, when you ask the dealers, they don't know nothing about a problem. But thats the #1 reason why I traded my 2002  Silverado in, the ABS's were scary, almost rolled into traffic more than once. Wife bumped into car in the parking lot and had to pay to get it fixed, brakes would fail when vehicle was almost stopped.  But if you unplugged the ABS fuse the brakes worked fine.

If you'll notice the Feds no longer require ABS. They abandoned ship on the antilock brakes because they could smell the law suits coming.
This is what we get when the idiots in Washington tell automobile manufactures how to make cars. What do they know about building cars? Those jerks couldn't build a PB&J sandwich.
Now we've got brakes that wont stop ya seat belts that hold ya in place while and air bag hits you in the face with enough force to break a windshield.
I feel safe don't ya'll

Well GM is FINALLY going to admit to it and recall them;  Just after I traded mine in.  The way I figure it, GM waited until thousands of owners paid $600+ to replace them, saved up the profit, and now figures they made enough $$$ to pay for the recall on any still  remaining.  That's why I just bought a Ford!

Just got a 92 Blazer and the anti lock brakes wire harness was disconected from the computer. I do not know why and do not care the brakes work fine as is. The only issue that sucks is the cruise will not work as the harness for the brakes is disconected. seems that they are all connected somehow.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.
